Learning Perl is a better option for beginners. Programming perl is basically the man pages in print format.
BTW, I learnt perl exclusively from the man pages. Not a single other reference.

The best book would be your monitor screen. But I recommend <a href="http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/lperl3/">Learning Perl</a>. Excellent book for beginners.
