Picked up the Dlink dsl modem from MTNL after infinite number of calls to all an sundry at gandhinagar and vikhroli (w) exchanges. According to an engineer Mr. Nullamuttu they have a problem with supplies and configuration of modem. Connected to an old box powered it up, changed a couple of passwords and it was up and running. Ran the broadband test program which failed to complete. downloaded some stuff speed is around 200kbps. I must move the phone line away from the UPS to add a few kbps.
So far so good.

Even better, buy a thicker telephone cable, to replace it with the one that runs from your building box to your office. Touchwood, I get excellent results for my dialup connection due to this better quality wire. The standard one costs 3 rupees per meter and the good one cost me 6 rupees per meter. It has an extra insulation covering the red and black pvc coated wires and its guage is much thicker.
K L Traders opposite Music Masters in Lamington Lane is a very good shop for wholesale as well as retail cable wires.

Rony.
