Light-weight distros - Linuxers

Are there any good projects/HOWTO's that help a user keep hardware
requirements within limits? Consider a case for example, where a user
wants to get as many good features of a modern GNOME/KDE desktop as
possible, on a Pentium 200 with 32 MB SDRAM ...
