I'm not sure about audio, but I tried to get it done on video. But I think the guy was a nut and so I'm not sure if it came clearly. I recollect the guy's battery go dead twice. :-(
I also recollect the nut trying to capture the crowd when RMS was talking. Lastly, he did not get a stand so I'm guessing it is going to quite shakky. ;-)
I just hope the guy isn't going to put any hindi music on top of the video shoot. ;-)
They are giving me the VCD (MPEG-2) on Tuesday evening, so I should be able to upload it to some website on Wednesday. If it is very bad, then I'm just going to throw it away.
Regards
Rishi

Hey, I need it irrespective of the quality of the video or audio. I mainly need the audio. Please let us know what happens about the video. Thanks.

Please do not encode RMS's speach in a propreitary VCD format. Though it may take some time, I will help you convert the tapes into an open standard. We need not do any thing like this in a hurry.

From their FAQ : "XviD is an ISO MPEG-4 compliant video codec. It's no product, it's an open source project which is developed and maintained by lots of people from all over the world."
mplayer plays files encoded with xvid.
Yeah but how does one dump the video from a VHS tape onto a computer? You need a hardware video / audio encoder right?
Or do you guys know something I don't?
Even in our office we have some card called SNAZZI that works on Windoze only. I checked for drivers for GNU/Linux ... no joy.
Snazzi themselves don't have information on this.

Probably. A VCR/VCP for playing the VHS tape and a video capture card will do the trick. Most of the TV tuner cards also have video capture capablities. Even if you have to use M$ Windows, the final result can be an non-propieratory one.
www.virtualdub.org : Virtualdub is an open source program which runs on windows which can be used to convert from mpeg -> avi.
The avi can use completely non-propieratory codecs : audio - ogg vorbis and for video xvid(mpeg4).

Well the important point here is the end result, which should be non-propieratory. The process could be run on any system though. Xvid have win32 binaries FYI.

RMS himself specifies that none of the recordings should be published in any proprietary format, and when uploaded, they should be free to download and use.

OK. They are giving me the VCD anyway's. That was the part of their deal. I don't think I could request them to give it to me into some open standard. They did not even speak english.
As you can see the guy that showed up was a nut. ;-)
With names like Ramesh Bhai and Papu - open standard is like we're from some other planet. ;-)
However, They will be giving me the VHS tape as well so I can give that to you.
When you get a hold of the encoding hardware and software that is open standard we can convert it from VHS to a digital format that conforms to an open standard.

Some people were interested in the audio of the speech. If you are considering making the speech available for download in audio format. You can use the ogg-vorbis format. take a look @ http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/ . Also encoders for ogg vorbis are easily available and Winamp (for those still using windows :(() and Xmms support the standard using plugins.
