Hi,
I've been searching for a Net Telephony solution today and realized that none of the providers (atleast from the ones I found) provide a non-windows dialer. MTNL seemed to come closest with a browser based dialer. But there was a catch. The javascript of the browser based dialer seems to be IE specific; it doesn't work on Firefox and Konqueror.
I also tried running all dialers (VSNL, MTNL, WorldPhone) with wine but with no success. I couldn't get past much of the VB runtime crap (esp. MS Forms 2.0) inspite of installing the runtime and manually downloading and registering individual dlls.
Does anyone around here know of a cheap net telephony solution which can work on my linux system?
Regards, Siddhesh

Both GNOME and KDE have standard IP phone applications. The easiest way to do net telephony is to find a friend in the US (or other country) with VoIP and a Linux box (or a Linux box and a card which can talk to the phone network directly) and have said friend route the call.

Now this may seem a bit far fetched but how about QEMU + KQEMU ( qemu's accelerator module ) running Windows?

But wouldn't that require me to get (legal) windows CDs and install on top of the emulator or something? I was looking for either a completely FOSS solution or something that doesn't require me to look at windoze at all.
How difficult is it for these guys to write a Java based dialer? With the number of Java programmers out there it doesn't even seem like a very costly soilution. But I guess VB developers are cheaper ;-)
Least they could do is open up the specifications so that we could atleast write one for ourselves.

Please excuse me if I have misunderstood, but by net telephony do you mean net2phone or skype?
If that is correct then skype is available. I am using it for months now. Both Skype out and skypeIN. and on linux. works like a charm.

Well, not the regular free skype. I was talking about Skypeout, the paid service to make calls to regular phones. But that too seems a difficult option since the only way to pay them is by credit card or paypal.
Thanks, Siddhesh

But I am sure there are many who would oblige with putting some money in your account? or paying on your behalf. It's not a whole lot. the favor can be easily returned with a couple of drinks at a good bar or something similar.
Please remember that 1 Skype account can be linked with a single paypal account. So you need someone who isnt planning to use skypeOut in the future.
Someone mentioned "boxes". You can subscribe to any of the voIP services such as Lingo or Vonage. Requires a monthly commitment ($14 onwards) but it's excellent. If your use justifies it, that is the way to go. Do not even need a computer after the initial settings.

Why dont you try ReactOS? It's similar to windoze. It is still only at v0.2.9 but it has a lot of compatibility with Windows XP. Not sure if the dialer will work with it but no harm trying, right? And the ISO is just a few MBs ( 10-20MB I think ).
Also, you could try distros like Mandrake, Ubuntu, SuSE which are the more userfriendly ones. They have Wine installed and fine tuned. So the dialer might just work out of the box in those distros. You could try installing them in Qemu.
I had forgotten to mention this earlier but PCQuest had carried an article about getting IE6 ( or was it 5.5 ) working with WINE. If you are sucessfull in getting IE working with WINE then you can use MTNL's web dialer that you mentioned.

Why dont you write to them regarding this? I am sure specs arent IP, are they? It might just help them get a more usable dialer at $0 :)

Sounds like worth a try.

I think I need to give Wine a serious try with a cooler head once more :) I'm sure I may have missed out on a few details.

Done that on MTNL's website (bol.net.in). Awaiting their response. Also had a long chat with the Tata indicom CC. He tried to sell the Windoze dialer to me saying that it will work on any OS... God alone knows what he was basing it on because he surely didn't mention wine ;-)
There's also an interesting review on skype (kicked myself for not noticing skype) on the PLUG list here:

Best thing is that they have a dialer for Linux :)
Thanks, Siddhesh

It's proprietary but friends of mine really like it, so it's evidently addictive too :-)
