this is going to happen as microsoft is just going after money & no quality at all while linux being totally free comes with a really good quality of software & even support when needed

Yes its much easier now to convince a well versed user or an openminded Sysadmin on converting to Linux on the Desktop; But its still hell getting an average office user to convert. Particularly when she has tough time installing a simple Multifunction Device or sharing files with another PC. Also the new M$ Office 2007 suite takes Office Productivity apps and their integration a notch higher. OpenOffice has a lot of catching up to do.

Yes on the edge and on the servers. But what about desktops? How many Linux Desktops you have?

As long as you keep your monkeys on your head expect only sh** and nuts. City of Munich and Amsterdam and many many others are not only not daft, the decision makers are answerable and liable. There are only specific cases in SMEs where linux has to coexist and hence loses the cost advantage. Places that use as an important input from customers, multimedia, page layouts, games and very specialised apps that cater to niche markets. But u arent talking of such things at all in this thread. U are talking of office document formats. Even in the above cases many issues can and are resolved by arrangement with the customer. BTW i have more than 800 desktops.

I am only highlighting a fact I face daily. Of resistance to migration to Linux at the grassroots level and that influencing the management decision about migration to Linux on the Desktop.
Do you call 800 desktops as an SME in India?
Apart from all that I would really like to know whats your industry sector and what are the 800 desktops being used for with Linux.

I understood that. But it means yor sales pitch is not right.

I really got exited there for a moment with the thought of a 800 desktop commercial Linux Desktop deployment.
I am sure there must be many such and even larger around. I would like to know about them so as to use them as references.

Sometime Today, KK cobbled together some glyphs to say:

Well, we have some 200+ FreeBSD desktops here, but then we're all developers.

Well from my personal experience it helps to target the top and then look at the trickle effect than bottom up. It takes a smart IT head to figure the huge cost savings a shift can result into. Besides looking at the goals for Ubuntu feisty fawn, this should seem less of a problem. Particularly the mobile user woes.

True. It helps to maintain a complete OSS tool chain if possible. For many organizations particularly SMEs this is indeed possible.

As you know in a typical SME the ditrector/owner/partner is the head of everything. And he is reluctant to handle the irate users himself. So resistance to change to Linux on the Desktop is driven from the bottom in the SME's.

Well, there is no substitute for hard work.. You have to realise that smart/influencial head of an organisation may not always be at the top of the organisation. So the really effective way is to target everybody, or find out who the person is and try to convince him/her and watch and maintain the "Spread" effect or "Jump to top and trickle effect".
In other words you have to maintain the trickle effect on the "Smartness" slope and not the "Power" slope. Your luck may still influence.. where your luck determines whether the "Influential" person is same as the "Smart" person or not :-P.
