hello. I had the shock of my life today. I had previously mentioned about a server installation I have to do. I don't find it will be any problem after the feedback I got about fedora. however there is another case which is really very interesting. I am trying to install gnu/linux on a machine with a seluron 2.8 processor and an intel ggc 2 motherboard with ati radeon display (the board is the latest intel mobo) if the case was a very streight forward case I would never have a problem in changing the distro. but I got the following interesting results. 1. ubuntu 6.06.1 (dapper) booted nicely with every device driver but display resolution was very bad probably 640 by 480. 2. ubuntu 6.10 was even more interesting. it did not boot at all on a machine with the same ggc 2 mother board with a seluron processor but booted very well on the same mobo with intel p4 3ghz processor. 3. fedora core 5 did not show up the graphical installer but I managed to install it without any desktop like gnome or kde. so the best part was on all computers ubuntu 6.06 aka 6.06.1 booted without proper display. and ubuntu 6.10 did not boot on the same ggc motherboard with seluron 2.8 processor and booted perfectly well with the same mobo with a p4 3 ghz processor. another small thing although it might not mean any thing. on the seluron and ggc mobo combination 256 mb ddr2 ram is available and on the p4 with ggc mobo 512 ddr2 ram. what shockes me time and again is that how 6.06 boots on every machine being older and 6.10 is so inconsistent. secondly 6.10 not just booted but gave perfect display (umm well at least 800 by 600) on a ggc with p4 and did not boot at all on other seluron machine with same mobo? Please sort out this problem and suggest the perfect distro. Krishnakant.
- ubuntu 6.06.1 (dapper) booted nicely with every device driver but
display resolution was very bad probably 640 by 480.
You will not get resolution above 640x480. its a limitation with ggc mother board. Its not supported at all.
- ubuntu 6.10 was even more interesting. it did not boot at all on
a machine with the same ggc 2 mother board with a seluron processor but booted very well on the same mobo with intel p4 3ghz processor.
It seems that ggc motherboards have some bug in bios. AS per i was told by the leading Indian PC Manufacturer. Coz my company was suppose to certify UBUNTU on their new models which was going to get launced in market with UBUNTU pre installed.
- fedora core 5 did not show up the graphical installer but I
managed to install it without any desktop like gnome or kde. so the best part was on all computers ubuntu 6.06 aka 6.06.1 booted without proper display. and ubuntu 6.10 did not boot on the same ggc motherboard with seluron 2.8 processor and booted perfectly well with the same mobo with a p4 3 ghz processor.
Even in test run I also faced this same problem at the testing center of the leading Indian PC Manufacturer.
Anyways lets keep our fingers crossed to get this bug resolved by Motherboard manufacturer....

Other than Mandriva 2007, noe of the other compatible distros exist, especially the Chinese ones.
Anyone on this list has Mandriva 2007 (that works)?

Rony.

Excuse me? I've posted this before. Sabayon worked out of the box, even 5.1 channel sound.
hi mehul ji, please give me the dvd. and by the way I got my problem sorted out. fc6 zindabaad and more than any thing Rajeev zindabaad! as suggested by rajeev, I used the dvd of fc6 which he gave me yesterday. it worked and I at least got 800 by 600 resolution and a good colour dept. and with rajeev's kind help also got the resolution to even better 1024 level. so fc6 can be testified to work properly. let's check up with mandriva now. regards. Krishnakant.

One point to note here. We got 1024x768(for a 15 inch, that's the best comfortable res.), but without 3D accel( i.e. no DRI). all i can do is hope that the OS DRI manages to reverse engineer the memory handling routines, or (Gasp ...) ati releases the spec. othserwise, since it is an office desktop, not having 3d-acces is not a biggie. otherwise, everything else is up... ;)
well about 3d all I can say is that the mobo was the ultra latest and that's why not completely supported. but what I got out of the box from fc6 was pritty good and after rajeev set the res, it was even better. let's see what mandriva can do. I will let the list know. thanks, Krishnakant.

What were the steps used to increase resolution?

hello all. if some one has mandriva 2007 plese contact me off the list asap. mean while I had a long discussion with rajeev our display and 3d master as many know. he provided me with the fedora core 6 dvd. he is pritty confident that fc6 would just do fine. although not on the list of intel but I would just try fc6 on rajeev's word and if "insha alla!" it works I will let the list know. thanks rajeev for the dvd. Krishnakant.
