Dear Sir,
This mail is in reference to your article "BuzzCut", page 12, Network Computing, July 2003.
".............As though the SCO v/s IBM standoff wasn't enough, the Linux battle is going to get murkier as thousands of underlying patented codes from different sources lie within its source. How these patents will affect SCO's claims of intellectual property infringements remains to be seen."
This morning was to jolt me so bad that i decided to pen this following email and give your publication a piece of my mind. Sir....these lines as commented in your esteemed magazine don't seem to be well researched. I have been an avid reader for a long time now but such attrocious comments i won't stand for.
Besides, i also suggest your publication takes sometime to review the story on how Microsoft post alignment with SCO has got the frailing victim to sue IBM and create the ensuing stir in markets world wide. It just goes to show the kind of cheap tricks mircosoft will play towards creating FUD about the Open Source and Free Software Movement.
Rather than get further from the crux of the issue, my humble suggestion would be to give an impartial look to the SCO v/s IBM story in your coming edition since you have already taken the trouble to harness FUD in IT users nationwide with your article. It indeed would help provide readers with clarity on the ETHICS of Microsoft and other Bullies in the market place.

Damn! I haven't read this article but from the excerpt it is clear that either the author hasn't done any research whatsoever into the topic or he hasn't understood the issue at all. Both these possibilities make it inappropriate for him to comment on the issue. For members on the list, these links may help:
http://www.cybersource.com.au/users/conz/linux_vs_sco_matrix.html http://www.opensource.org/sco-vs-ibm.html http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/sco-gnu-linux.html
Since Jasubhai publications are widely read by students as well as professionals, the impact of such careless comments could be pretty significant.
Tahir,
Think a good compilation of links towards keeping them well informed and also to give subscribers countrywide clarity on whats the reality of the situation is....is warranted.
NC is doing a great job no doubt. A neutral body like them working on such an article is always a good idea.

Hi Trevor!
The first two links are good starting points and they have extensive references (esp. the second one). The article on GNU's website is good to dispel fears of the possible "death" of Free Software due to this issue. You (or anyone else) may forward them to NC.
Dear Mr.Warren, Thanks a lot for pointing out the error. My apologies for the same. We shall be carrying a corrigendum in the next issue along with your letter. Let me assure you that, we at Network Computing, sincerely believe that our role is to provide credible information to our readers and not to evangelize software, whether it is from Microsoft or from the open source community. It is only with active feedback from readers like yourself that we'll be able to roll out a better product. Please feel free to share your observations with us from time to time.
