Hello All,
I m using COMPAQ's DL320 server.'ve installed RHL7.2 with apache1.3.26,php4.2.2,freetds0.53 and Oracle8i. Php4.2.2 is installed for odbc, oracle, mysql, postgres, apache. But server has one problem. When m/c get rebooted after some days uptime,it doesnot bring eth0 up by stating that other host is having same ip. so,i have to change ip in eth0's ifconfig file.then only it comes up on network. so,what cud be the problem??? i think there's something wrong with NIC.bad NIC which doesnot release ip. or some network drivers problem??
Any suggestions are apprecitated. Thanks in advance.

My guess is that your network uses DHCP to assign IP addresses and this particular host is configured with a static IP.
Your options are to either use dhcpcd on this host, or remove this host's IP address from the DHCP pool so that it doesn't get allocated to any other machine.

yes,ur guess is right that this machine is having static IP and this ip is not DHCP ip pool. we cant us dynamic ip on this machine because we r using it as a production server. we have five vlan and we are using dhcp server it's different from which we gave ip address for this server. so, it's totally different. ip'll never clash to this vlan.
i think its a firmware problem.isn't it??

not entirely convinced.

We have not configured DHCP for servers.Dynamic IPs which are given to customers are from 203.187.196.* series.basically we are an ISP,providing Broadband service. my server's ip is 203.187.192.19. so 203.187.192.* is allocated for servers only.and all server is having static ips.most importantly we r using cisco's CNR.we dont have DHCP.

'll make u convinced. I have a compaq's desktop on which i have installed RHL7.2 and installed apache, php, oracle with no difficulties. But the same things i m installing on Compaq's DL320 server.Dont know what is the reason i cud not installed php, oracle. when i installed php it gave me assembler errors.then i updated all gcc, glibc libraries i was done.but still oracle client is not installed. once i rebooted that machine it started giving error that another host is having IP address.again reinstall the machine.runs perfectly for 3-4 days. but again machine get rebooted , gives same error. thats y i m thinking that somewhere hardware compatibility issues come.. and more weired thing is that yesterday i gave 203.187.192.19 ip to machine.worked fine.get rebooted 3-4 times.worked fine. now today morning it was denying to accept this ip though machine is not rebooted.it is up from tomorrow night.now i configured it with 203.187.192.30 ip.it is working fine.
now u suggest me what cud be the problem?? my server's configuration is: (Proliant DL320 server)
compaq NC3163 fast ethernet 100mbps nic 1.0 ghz cpu with 1 gb RAM.

It is advised that when you send descriptions of IPs used for production systems or otherwise on a mailing list, only non-routable IP pools be used to describe your problems. Giving out real IPs acts as invitation to malicious crackers, specially when you have also provided various server versions. So be careful next time.

you mentioned in a previous mail that you use Cisco CNR. I gather from Cisco's website that CNR is a integrated DNS/DHCP service that allows policy based naming and ip services. Have you checked that there are no conflicts due this ? The best way to solve this problem will be to slowly eliminate each variable.

* IMO, your desktop had a plainer Kernel, with no SMP/HIGHMEM support or things like that. This 320 has 1 GB you said, and I guess the kernel was diff. from your Desktop. Confirm.

* What happened to this IP assignment? How did it loose this IP, so that the i/f "denied to accept it" later? Did you find the i/f to be down later? Or did you de-assign the 192.19 address? Pls explain.
now today morning it was denying to accept this ip though machine is not rebooted.it is up from tomorrow night.now i configured it with 203.187.192.30 ip.it is working fine.
* If 192.30 works fine, so should 203.187.192.19, unless there is a duplicate IP already in your network.

Hi Philip,
I have a doubt,, if i have configured my network as static , then while booting does Linux search for dhcp server... and if not, then that interface should come up properly without any issues....
it is like , if Linux is taking IP from DHCP then there is no problem... and if it the IP is static then Linux has no problem bringing up eth0 using that IP. ( i think it doesn;t check for DHCP )
Then what is the problem........

assume eth0 has static IP 192.168.0.10
assume rest of network is on DHCP with dhcp pool 192.168.0.*
it is very likely that while linux:eth0 is down, some other machine comes up and gets IP address 192.168.0.10.
After that, if eth0 comes up, it gets an IP conflict.
It seems that this is not the case here since the dhcp pool does not include the linux machine's IP address.
Philip
Hi all,
Regarding this problem , what i did was i did these steps to delibrately make the conflict with an NT machine on the same network:-
#ifdown eth0 #ifconfig eth0 10.3.2.33 netmask 255.255.0.0 ( 10.3.2.33 is the IP of the NT machine ) This worked fine , it didn;t give me any error stating that 10.3.2.33 is already allocated, though it gave error to NT machine (IP for it was taken from DHCP ) saying IP conflict.
So i feel that if we say that IP is static then the eth0 of linux machine should come up without any problem , whether conflict or no conflict....
but then donno how to solve kavita's problem.
