Dear list,
I use Debian Sarge and I have just got a Samsung DVD drive with a CD writer. I've installed k3b, but I am facing problems in opening it. It starts loading, but stops in between and has to be terminated. What could be wrong??
Thanks.
Regards, Aparna.

sarge is pretty old - maybe you need a recent kernel to run this

Actually, the stock kernel, 2.6.8, is VERY antedeluvian in every sense! So, you weren't wrong. It's just that I wanted to leave the system reasonably updated, so I compiled a new kernel and put it there.
On a side note, to Debian users: compiling the kernel is a fun task. Please do read about the Debian way of compiling kernels and kernel-package, so that you can run the latest kernel with little effort on Sarge.
But I daren't speak further, as the person in charge is a member of this list :-)

Sorry, when I said in charge, I thought that was implied.
Anyway, thanks a lot Manoj!!

It isn't. Sarge comes with Linux 2.6.x

The very 1st time you start k3b you need to do so as root in order to set up your CD/DVD burning group then assign the users you want to be able to use k3b. Else running it as a normal user does not start it up.

Actually run k3bsetup as root. Configure it and then start k3b as a normal user.

Well, magically, k3b now works. I don't know how!!
Thank you all for your suggestions!!

Check this one - http://technofreakatchennai.wordpress.com/2006/12/28/k3b-how-to-write-cds/
Am not sure whether you are meaning that the k3b application itself is closing down (or crashing down, rather). What vihan said is also true.

How did you install K3B? Did you use apt or did you actually install it manually? Its your package thats giving problems. Try the apt way to install it. Do you run it as the primary ( sudo ) user or an additional user. The sudoer should not have access problems.

this is debian, not ubuntu - in debian they still use the old fashioned concept of 'root'

I have used Debian Sarge and I don't recollect having to set any users for K3B for my first installation user account. In fact I have never done it in any distro that I have tested on my system. It is the additional user that does not get access and the system pops up a specific message for the same for the first time. The problem faced by the OP seems to be package-installation related.

Rony.
