Greetings,
The venue for the meeting at 8th August is IITB. Visit http://www.it.iitb.ac.in for directions to reach IITB. The speakers are
1. gnus - Abhijit (alias Quasi) 2. PHP - Nirav.
Meeting is at 4pm. All are invited.
Regards.
This is at the KReSIT, right? Since it is a Sunday, remember that the entrance to KReSIT would be through the basement and not the big imposing glass doors.

Hi,
I have a strange problem.
I have assigned 192.168.0.25 to my Linux server but it takes a new ip from the DHCP server after few hours. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 shows the ip as 192.168.0.25 but 'ifconfig' shows 192.168.0.247 (ie IP taken from the DHCP server).
Please help ! Thanks, Nikhil
check in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
BOOTPROTO=static is there I guess currently this line shows as BOOTPROTO=dhcp

uninstall dhcp client?? - this is just to solve your problem, not a solution for the problem. Which distribution (and version are you using), check if you have any updates for the same, there might be a bug in the OS which can be solved by an update.
I am using Redhat 9.0 and the kerne is 2.4.
How do I uninstall DHCP client ?

rpm -qa | grep dhcp
rpm -e { WHAT EVER DHCP PACKAGES WERE LISTED ABOVE }
Use SuSE for heaven's sake if you don't want to bother with something this simple.

I don't see how using SuSE will automagically solve his problem. The problem is with DHCP and not the RedHat distro.
one query.. are u using some sort of network booting??

No, I am not using any kind of network booting. This is a standalone IBM PC running Redhat 9.0 (kerner 2.4). The system changes it's IP after few hours.

A person who is using Debian (I haven't tried Suse) will never face any difficulties in removing a package. I think that is what Amish was telling.

Quasi.....It sure would still pay to atleast spend sometime listing the features/capability of the same.
Arbitary to some but quite relevant to the other.

Features & Capabilities of Gnus ------------------------------- #1 Most customisable email+news reader in The World(tm) #2 That makes it the most powerful. #3 It also makes it the least elegant to the novice. #4 Written in elisp. So hosts of addons and extreme integration with all that is Emacs. (integration without the hassles) #5 Coolest on the console. Displays smiley's et.al in X but it is not as graphically smooth as something like, say, Thunderbird #6 Most importantly, loads and loads of fun frobnicating.

I can't seem to get it to detect my pcmica ethernet card.
Got a lot on my plate at the moment, so I'm running with FC2 at the moment. Had a little problem with the card and FC2 but solved it.

What card is it? What does your `cardctl status` show? Is yenta_socket module loaded ?
I am using a 3com Megahertz 574B card. It works. What info does your FC2 give about the card ?

Its a NetGear FA411 pcmcia ethernet card. Worked perfectly till I changed the harddisk. I had a debian testing/unstable install on this same machine with the older hdd. In fact it works w/ both FC2 as well as Knoppix 3.4. With FC2 I had to fiddle with the initscripts in /etc/rc5.d/ .
The problem is that both pcnet_cs as well as 8390 (used by knoppix) are loaded, so is yenta_socket. I keep getting the error saying network not reachable. I just can't get the network configured during the install. No sweat, I will crack it after the 20th. Very busy till then.

Not really, if you go back along the thread, someone (I don't recall who) said that he would bring his laptop along to show something at the meet. I replied to this saying saying that I too would probably get my laptop and mentioned that I was having problems installing debian on it and then I replied to specific queries about what was not working in the install.
Just one thingleading to another, though I guess maybe I should have changed the subject: line. Mea culpa.
And you mind trimming your mails ?

If you have a mail reader, even with minor threading qualities, you will notice that we have not done what you claim we have done. I accept we should have changed the subject line. But the resulting thread did not grow nor were there any participants other than the two of us. We now have a third, and so I am changing the subject line appropriately.
While we are at it, please do not top post and please trim your post such as they contain only relevant quoting -- not the entire message.
