The recovery CD may erase your partition. Download the latest 'finnix' live CD from the net. http://www.finnix.org/Download Take a printout of this message. After you boot the live CD, type 'fdisk -l' to list your partitions. Then run 'fsck /dev/your_part' to check your partition one by one for errors. If you have an ext3 partition then you can even run 'e2fsck -c /dev/your_part' to look for bad blocks on your disk surface.
