List,
I have been trying to find what 'GmBH' is under the context of a bash shell /Linux distro. Most search engines only return the 'financial' term used in Germany (typically) and some countries in EU. (bailout effect? ;) ) None of them return anything pertinent to Linux or GNU or any other FOSS.
Could somebody let me know what that is for? (Was it related to an environment variable?)

Where did you find it? The actual context will be more helpful. The closest I seem to have got to it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gesellschaft_mit_beschr%C3%A4nkter_Haftung

Ah, I cannot remember the context. This was long time back. Probably something that I read in a book or somewhere related to Gentoo? (?) -- Frankly, I do not exactly remember where I saw it.

Exactly, the IMF - (EU) - Greece issue seems to dominate the web too ;) :P ...

Perhaps this?
SUSE was founded on September 2, 1992 in Germany, under the name Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH (S.u.S.E. GmbH), meaning: "Software and System Development, Inc.". The first GNU/Linux distribution (S.u.S.E. Linux 1.0) was released in 1994 - making SUSE one of the oldest existing GNU/Linux distributions.

Just as an additional piece of information, at least 3 distributions preceded SuSE:
1. Soft-Landing Systems (SLS, the first ever Linux distribution) 2. Yggdrasil 3. Slackware
(1) and (2) are memories now, (3) I believe is still around.
