It is important to let people know and realise how much can be achieved on Linux, how easy it is for end users to operate and what software is available.
Ahem ... It is NOT easy. Linux us still not user friendly. There are a lot of issues with reagrds to usability and othe stuff ... even Redhat accepts it :).
This is a really important concern for Linux. Though it is
powerful
and flexible ,most people are not aware of it's advantages.
Most of the
people think it's a *cheap software* which is not worth
working on or
Unfortunately this is quite true. I teach students doing their MSc in s/w systems, and I was amazed at their ignorance about free software.
Yeah true ... while
Since I teach software engineering, we've taken up GNU/Linux as a case study for this subject. I get the feeling it has aroused their interest in free s/w. One student asked me, "If it's so great, which I can see it is, how come we never knew about it?".
There are a lot of other great things that people don't know about too ... :)
I also wish to encourage these students to take up GNU/Linux related final-semester projects, where I hope the PRC will assist me.
Nice Nice ... keep the steam up :)

I would like you to think from a different angle here.
If you put linux on a pc, properly installed and setup, a normal (non geek / non techie ?) user will not have problems with it. He can continue using internet, email, word / excle type of applications without facing any problems. In fact, if you use star office, he does not even need to learn new commands since it is almost same as in msoffice.
A normal user basically uses internet, email and MsOffice for most of the work he does on the PC at home and office. AT most, add music + videos to it. That all, Linux does as good as windows, if not better.
What I am trying to say is that if he does not fool around with the settings, does not wipe out important files, the system will give him good service. Ofcourse, someone has to install and set it up for him the first time.

just to add to this. for a new computer user, ie, someone who has never used a computer before, after using a well set up GNU/Linux system, will find windows hard to use.
The fact is, Windows is perceived to be user friendly only because users are used to it. Windows is not an intuitive system, neither is GNU/Linux. The double-click is one of the least user-friendly interactions.

I agree..the biggest hurdle to adoption of GNU/Linux on the desktop is the "I dont want to relearn" factor...and this attitude mostly comes from the top in most organisations...

whatever the top does or does not do, it definitely sets policies..and buying GNU software is something that will often be influenced by policy... and it is both unfair and inaccurate to say that the top does not do anything!!!

Hi Ketan
tell me how to surf using linux.how to configure modem settings in linux.how to receive and send hotmail and yahoo mails using linux
Configuring modem is totally depend on whether you have internal or external modem. If it is external them connecting to the net is quite simple but if it is internal then U should check for the driver of the modem for linux.
According to my knowledge hotmail uses http protocol for its mail server & I don't know how to configure it B'coz it needs SMTP & POP3 protocols for incoming & outgoing mail resp. to configure in any email client.
Talking about Yahoo then, I think the U can't even configure Yahoo with your mail box B'coz, since last few months Yahoo has become paid for its POP3. even then check it out
