HI all, There was some problem with my xserver, it did not start after i installed java sdk 1.5. i think it was because of the space or something. anyway i removed that but now the problem is i have to login every time in text mode and i have too issue startx manually, using the command startx. How do i make it automatically do that and one more thing only gnome starts up. if i give startx kde it tries to start the x server but fails, any clues what could be the problem and how can i resolve it...

hmm... that is logically not possible. There is no connection b/w Xserver & jdk/jre. Terribly sorry but the above statement makes no sense to me.

you must have changed the default runlevel (assuming here that you are using a redhat derivative) X in RHL starts only in init 5. basically one of (xdm, gdm, kdm) is not starting.
in debian u need to start up "/etc/init.d/gdm" at boot.

That was "startkde" isn't it? If everything fails, then you may try putting above command inside rc5.d

it would be helpful if you posted the x server's log.

check you ~/.xinitrc file. delete it and see if X works.
