Hello All,
I am trying to run compiz-manager in Etch but it needs XGL. However XGL drivers on the net are for nvidia and ati. How does one get compiz running on an old i845? I have installed compiz packages from the shame repo. Compiz-manager does not seem to do much except change my title bar and after pressing Ctrl+C to stop compiz, the active windows don't close until I log out. I want those 3D cubes. They are enabled in the CompizConfg settings manager. Here is the message I get when I run compiz-manager.
"Checking for Xgl: not present. xset q doesn't reveal the location of the log file. Using fallback /var/log/Xorg.0.log Detected PCI ID for VGA: 00:02.0 0300: 8086:2562 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present. Trying again with indirect rendering: Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present. Checking for non power of two support: present. Checking for Composite extension: not present. aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity "

Do you have something like the below in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf ---------------xxx--------------- Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection ---------------xxx---------------

I did not have the lines so I copy pasted them and rebooted the machine. Now after doing 'sudo compiz-manager' I am able to move the cubes. Thanks for the tip. There is one little issue of title bars getting knocked off and even after closing compiz, I have to use the File -> Exit route instead of the close button on the title bar. Even after all this, there is resiidue in the task bar. It goes away only after logging out and relogging in.

Further update. I ran sudo compiz-manager from the run dialog and as long as I am in compiz, everything is fine. I noticed that though each of my 4 desktops has different wallpapers, the cube shows 4 faces of the same desktop. I like the way windows can be dragged from one face to another.
Video player had a problem that it showed the desktop with icons instead of the movie. For that the libxine1 package was updated with a new version in apt. Now video plays properly in compiz.

Try "emerald --replace" or "gtk-window-decorator --replace" as a normal user (ie with su or sudo) (The gtk-window-decorator doesn't work that well for me. I get an extra white band near my panels. emerald works just fine.)

There is a confusion between "Workspaces" & "Viewports". See this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/153322 Try setting the number of metacity workspaces to 1 (you can use gconf and navigate to /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces). Then in the Compiz Settings Manager go to General Options >> Desktop Size set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4, Vertical Virtual Size to 1 and Number of Desktops to 1.

I think you are doing all this in Gnome. I have Kde, however I will look for equivalent settings. Thanks for the tips.

Desktop Environment doesn't matter here. All of them used and still use workspaces. Compiz provides Viewports with similar functionality. It provides 4 Viewports per workspace i.e. 4 sides of a cube. I believe now that isn't a fixed number anymore, you can change that upto 26 if I recall correctly. Thus, what is happening is you have 4 workspaces * 4 viewports = 16 views.
