1) Can I run my computer without the CMOS battery?
2) My computer BIOS asks for setting date and time (when I switch off power supply from the spike guard)?
3) I have replaced the CMOS battery a couple of times but the problem seems to exist even now.
4) Do I have to replace / upgrade the Motherboard BIOS? If yes, what precautions do I have to take?
5) Symptom: My computer freezes randomly (1 hr, 20 mins, 15 mins)

yes - but you need to set cmos everytime you boot

that's what the cmos battery is there for.

if your system just freezes out of no reason at all, then get your ram module checked first. pop in a live cd and run memtest86 on it

or overheating - check if the system fan is working

Most common reasons are:
1. Overheating 2. Dust accumulation / improper contacts 3. Failing component ( commonly the RAM ) 4. Conflicting devices

Motherboard needs repairs.

That will not solve the problem of volatile memory.

mins, 15 mins)
CPU fan (as Kenneith said) RAM, SMPS, Panvati HDD cable, Caps in Motherboard swollen.

There is a small signal transistor near the cmos. In older boards it's a to92. In new boards it's an sot23. It's this device and a couple of components around which konk out. Replacing these will solve your problem. If not change mobo.
