Hello,
Can anyone tell me which router will work best for MTNL TriBand and Linux? MTNL has provided following list on their website [http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/triband/htm/tri_faq.htm#11]
# D Link 502 T # Comtrend CT-564 # Westell A –90-30199-07 # Zyxel Prestige 660 H –61 # Erricsson HM410c # Xavi(7722+)
I do not have any USB port on my home machine (its old celeron 550 machine), just ethernet.
Thanks Krishna
You can opt for # D Link 502 T Router which has USB as well as one Ethernet Port . I'm using abouve Router from past 1 year without any problem .
Regards

Stick to dlink. Sofar no failures in my installations. The dlink tech guys were able to tell me how to configure the modem for a bsnl link. And dlink service center at BKC Kalina was ready to solve problems. Avoid the small white box by a chinese company (cant remember the model / co.) like the plague.

Another reason to use the Dlink is that it has a linux os and you can actually ssh into it and made changes and modification. It has its own firewall, etc that can be set for minor use. For a very good control on your firewall, naturally it should be on your server where you have full control.
Rajeev R K showed these to me when we were setting up the same at one of my clients office. The white box chinese thing does not have any of these.

Mine has only telnet. No SSH. But yes having linux and mtd and jffs allows you to do really nifty things.

Well it has. But only the mfg knows how to use it. Morover under heavy load the modem hangs and requires a cold start. And the crappy internal webpage does not render in FF / Konqueror. Name was Axistech afair.

That was the same modem I was talking about when I had posted a query a few months ago. Have you found out where the logout option is available in its web interface? The modem is called Hewei.

Rony.

Hi
I think the white box u r mentioning is UTstar. Now when I took my MTNL triband connection exactly 1 month back the person who came to my house a local contractor for installation said that MTNL now gives only UTstar modem and no Dlink modem. I did not know that there were choices to be made
Anyways so far UTstar has worked fine.
Thanks Ninad

hmm. Most likely no firewall. So setup one on your box. Rony is right it is Huwaei, sold to many Indian repackers.

Umm...so the modem's web interface is accessible to the entire world or is it that its listening only on the private interface?

Dlink web and telnet wide open by default. Huwaei never got to getting connected in the first place.

The DLink 502T does *not* have a ssh server. The default userid/passwd to access the router vi web/telnet is admin/admin.

You have the choice of taking the modem from MTNL (and paying Rs. 80 per month as rent) or buying your own and putting it. If you buy your own, then ofcourse, you can choose what you want. But it will be 2 years before you recover your cost from lower rental (Dlink : Rs. 2400 / 80 - 3 years).

The 502T is around 2K in the Lamington Road circuit.
