i wud like to resize / to make room for Dos. is this possible?
theres a tool called resize2fs , but havent used it i guess u gotta b really careful with tools like this ...
Can ny1 guide pls?
ummm... till date I have only used fdisk which does anything. But you seem not to have any free space. So the only way to create a new partition is to divide an existing one. i.e. delete and then create 2 in place of the deleted one.
Now the following method I propose is fraught with danger :D, but I have split a FAT partition with it once. Hopefully it will work on a ext[2/3] partition. But you simply *MUST* backup important files.
It is really simple actually.
#1. Make sure you have the latest stable release of fdisk. #2. Defrag the HDD (I used the norton scandisk as the partition I split was a dos one) #3. Delete the BIG partition #4. First recreate the partition you deleted - but without the bottom few cylinders required for the Dos partition. #5. Then create the Dos partition.
Also, you can do ASM/DOS with a ~5-10Mb partition. So you may consider splitting your /boot or swap partitions if they have the space to spare.

i guess ext3 is not deragmented so i used fdisk w/o defragmenting ....

first i used parted nd resized / successfully then i added a Dos partition but after reboot i got the following error:
===================================================================== /: The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 1026144 blocks The physical size of the device is 1000038 blocks Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt! ======================================================================
so i used fdisk to delete the / nd Dos partition afterwards I recreated / partition to the original size
Now i don't get the error (but i still don't hav Dos partition :(
So i guess the info abt the filesystem is written somewhere (superblock?). I guess if i were able to change the block-size , I wud not hav got the error.
Is there ny way I can change the block-size in the superblock? What is superblock anyways?
Thx Nikhil
