Though I cannot right now help you with the issue as I am still quite new to Linux, I can tell you that I have a Compaq presario 2184 with the same graphics card and it runs pretty well with Mandrake Linux 9.1.

In the Mandrake Installation, I just selected the ATI card option and it picked up the right driver for it.
