Trying my hand at linux after burning my fingers with mandrake ages ago. got hold of an old Live CD of Debian with Gnome 2.4 and find the desktop architecture really cool.
Here are a few questions I need answered:
1.Will someone educate me on the new Debian 4 release? What are the system requirements?
2.ToI of yesterday has the piece on Knoppix having a desktop even better than Windows Vista. Can it be installed or it exists only on a Live CD format?

Hi,
Gnome 2.4 is quite old! Get the latest one Gnome 2.14!

Debian has never release version 4. It is still in 3.1r1 (Sarge) version. I think you are talking about Knoppix? It released version 4 sometime ago.. For more information on debian, see http://www.debian.org
2.ToI of yesterday has the piece on Knoppix having a desktop even better than Windows Vista. Can it be installed or it exists only on a Live CD format?
Yes, Knoppix can be install on your harddisk easily, but always backup your data! I recommended to get Ubuntu Linux. See: http://www.ubuntu.com/ Its free and even you can order the CDs for free. But, ask here, someone must have spare CD!

U did not ask the right questions at the right places. GNU/Linux has been flying since 1999 with me.

Try sarge. works on a via c3 with 128 MB. 256MB makes it fly.
2.ToI of yesterday has the piece on Knoppix having a desktop even better than Windows Vista.
Vista is vapour ware amongst the more charitable descriptions.

Knoppix can be installed to your hard drive. But read up properly about partition tables and windoze wickedness before installing. Ideally use a new hardisk.
