hello luggers, is there a system simulation software available for GNU/Linux like Matlab? ... i am not entirely sure but i think Mathworks has a matlab build for linux too ... but are there others?

Maltab has a version for linux.
Octave is a GNU package used to simulation is available atleast on debian and Redhat other than being avaialble online.
i have never used octave but you could check out what all can be done using that.
Hi, Check out Scilab and Octave. Ocatve comes preinstalled with most distros but scilab can be obtained from : http://www.scilab.org/

http://maxima.sourceforge.net I think mathematica also has a version for GNU/Linux.
There are many. Mathematica, Matlab and Maple are amongst the more popular ones. But there are some FSF alternatives too like Octave and Gnuplot (ok, this one doesn't compare to Mathematics but it's still useful). If you're interested in Number Theory/Algebra simulations, try looking at PARI, MAGMA Macaulay etc. Freshmeat has many answers.
