hi, is there a way i can use a device blocked by one program, if required by another prog.? the situation is like this, i am running skype on linux and at the same time i want to play xmms for some songs, (i can do it in windows, skype and winamp together so i hear the person as well as some music in backgrond.)
to my knowledge i dont think its possible in linux, but just wanting to wish the i am wrong ;-)
Evening Harshal,
depends which kernel and driver you using. Make sure you upgrade your kernel to 2.6, which has Advanced Linux Sound Architecture in lieu of the older sound system. It is completely thread and SMP-safe.
and so as 2.6, with AIO ;)
Animesh.

No. But check out jackd. It might have some oss plugin to allow non blocking access to oss apps.

Your driver should support multiplexing. In my case, my old ESS card's driver supported it but my onboard Intel card doesnt. Try enabling software multiplexing.

use the jack sound daemon with alsa. This one supports software mixing, even if the hardware doesnt.
Uhmm, IIRC, with ALSA 1.0.9, dmix is enabled by default, which is used for software mixing. No need for jack even.
