If you are talking of web mail, I don't see how its any different than viewing a normal site, though I've heard issues with Hotmail & a proxy (nothing that cant be solved).
If you are talking of downloading mails, I don't think so.. u need a gateway or at least a single line iptables / ipchains rule to allow mail traffic.
