shouldn't such irresponsible people be banned lest ofcourse they have a good explanation? :/
I think discretion in moderation is a good habit. As is said by the elders, sam, dam, dand, bhed which translates as make them understand, fine them, punish them by imprisonment and then kill them for multiple offences. While this is a extreme. For mailing list a good policy could be warn, moderate and then ban for multiple offences.

S D D B actually means....
Explain/talk to them. Buy them off. Punish them. If nothing else works, divide them.
In the caution rules list for new members, we could put up a short note on how installing certain freeware or IM signups could compromise the address book and send spam to everyone including this list and result in getting a `gpl'. Potential members could be advised to use a seperate email id exclusively for this list and no entry of the list email id in any other address book.
Regards,
Rony.

i agree - moderation implies an attempt to educate (indoctrinate?) a person which goes against the spirit of freedom. Just give them the boot. If they educate themselves, they can always rejoin later. I think that the list admins have enough on their plate without troubling themselves about wondering whether a post should go through or not.

Give them the boot for a first offence?

yes. Chennai lug is not moderated. People are either allowed or booted. Everyone is over 18 years old and presumed to know how to behave, no one has the time to teach/educate them. Hyderabad does the same thing. Of course, if Anurag and co have no other work and dont mind doing this ...

We can't simply assume that all members are old enough. Also, kicking people out of silly things causes alienation, and we're here to try and attract a user base. I know many will jump forward and say "we don't want such people, good riddance" but that's hardly the way to go about increasing the popularity of Free Software.
A warning and moderation is good enough. If moderators are overworked then the veterans of the group can take turns every week or fortnight to moderate.

that opens a fresh can of worms - who decides who is fit to moderate? Boot is much simpler.

High hopes. The veterans are totally overworked and tired of telling people of nettiquette and it's cost. And this one is just plain crookedness. But i (sullenly) agree to your 1st para. We must hope that sense will be knocked into the newcomers. Besides if he is a spammer he'll register in a new name and continue.

I totally agree with you. I'm tired :(

Umm...IRC does it all the time. When I was a n00b, I was kicked out once for setting my status to away. I immediately rejoined and was told the reason. There after I never did it. Banning serves a lesson that one doesn't forget :P

There is a trend of websites which ask for your Yahoo!, gmail or Hotmail password, and send invitations to everyone in the addressbook. The invite appears to come from you, but you don't even know this happened.

both chennai and hyderabad ban these guys on sight - amazing how fast others learn. Usually a defaulter is on his knees apologising within minutes of the post going through - usually gets off if he apologises

In this case the defaulter has not apologized. that or his reply to this post is still waiting moderator approval :)
As regards Dinesh's theory of someone registering with another id and spamming, that cannot happen. He will be on moderation the moment he signs up.

The spammer need not say anything on the list. He can sit silently, gather emails and then spam :P

yes, but only a fool will give out his credentials to other email accounts. Remember the hulla ballo that was created when someone suggested using meebo? :O
