Hi Friends I recently purchased HP J028tx laptop which came along with pre installed Windows 8. I plan to get rid of windows 8 completely and install Ubuntu, but would like to know how to retain Windows 8 licence as no windows license key was provided along with the laptop. I may need the license to setup virtual instance for testing connectivity with Samba ADs server. Kindly advice

I believe you'll have better luck on windows users group as you'd find subject matter experts out there in much greater number as opposed to this group.
In Windows 7, you can make a system image backup from control panel , and use it to restore your system case of a crash.
I guess the same can be done in Windows 8 ?

This is seriously OT here, but here goes.
1. The windows license that comes with a newly purchased PC/laptop is called an OEM license. OEM licenses are not transferable, so you are not allowed to use this same license to setup a virtual instance. To setup a virtual instance you need a Retail license of Windows.
2. OEMs (HP In this case) generally do not provide you with an OS jewel case. All you get is (a) a "Certificate of authenticity" sticker somewhere on the laptop (usually underside) which would contain the license key if it is required to re-install the laptop, and (b) a "Designed for Windows" sticker.
You might get an original Windows installation CD (Dell) or a partition on the laptop from where you can install Windows (Lenovo) or a "restoration CD" which cannot be used to install Windows (I think Sony).

Make recovery disks (DVDs) from the HP software in your laptop. Then play with the machine.
Just a suggestion just check below your battery the license key could be present over there.

You should ask the manufacturer for a refund for an unused license, I don't know if it is possible in India.

Hi,
One more worry about this laptop is going to be the GPT partitioning scheme instead of the MBR partitioning scheme - but its not a big issue really if you don't care about the recovery partitions et al.
You need to:
1. Create OS install disk (or USB image) using HP utility 2. Format the hdd and install Ubuntu (leave some space for Win 8 partition) 3. Install Win 8 using recovery disk created on step #1 4. You can dual-boot to this partition or attach it to a VM
Create a "Recovery Disk" on a USB pendrive using these steps:

Hope that helps, Shamit
