hi, am looking for a mono laser printer (and/or multifunctional device) where the primary criteria is economy in running cost.
my guess is that those toners that can be refilled with ease (as opposed to buying new cartridge each time) drastically brings down the cost. is that correct? if so then what are the printers that allow for this?
Speaking of multifunctional devices, are they really compelling? especially the ones which have Fax and PC fax? the samsung multifunctional 4110 is only 2000 more than regular mono laser but without a fax.
any recommendations based on first hand experience, highly solicited.
thanks abhishek

In the past MFD units used to be prone to breakdowns, don't know about the reliability of the current crop.

In my opinion stay away from after market refills. One botched experience taught me to go with the original replacement even though it costs more. The guy botched up the plate inside the cartridge, promised that a new plate would fix it. I ended up paying for the toner and a new plate around Rs. 1000 for printouts with a 1" wide dark grey band "watermark" on my printouts :( - whereas a new one cost Rs. 3100.

The USP value depends on how much of each function you plan to use. Do you send/receive a lot of faxes? Suggest you make a matrix of the features and how much of each you will use and then decide.

I would recommend the Samsung ML-1610. I have the ML-1520P and have been running it in economy mode ever since I bought it. The economy mode prints look crisp and clear. I have tried printing in the regular mode but its just a waste of toner. The toner that I got from Samsung is a introductory toner or something so its supposed to print only 3000 pages as opposed to the regular toner which prints 10000 pages. If you're buying a Samsung, contact Growmore ( Chembur ). They will give you the best deals and try to differ your purchase to the month end when they are trying to meet targets. You can pressurize them to give you a couple of regular free cartridges along with the printer at no extra cost :) I think the cost of the printer is about Rs.6500/- You can check out the ad in TOI (yesterday or a couple of days back).

My printer repairer recomends keeping away from the recent low cost Samsung series as the build is not sturdy.

Afaik none permit refilling. Most of the "illegal" refills use waste toner, which has a residual charge and therfore clumps. Also the toner assy. is forced open causing the corona wires, cleaning rubber and internal lamps to misalign, thus ruining quality. Further the drum coating wears off due to the cleaning assy pressure and is no good after one refill.

Space saving. Otherwise an experienced PC user with scanner and printer can do all that the MF can. And the scanner and modem in the MF are relatively bad.

Yeah. All you really do is ruin your printer. My old HP Laser Jet used to work fine until I used a refilled cartridge. I spent a lot of money in trying to get it working correctly there after but had no luck :(

Which model. I too have an HP laser printer 4MP. It's printing double. Which means that there is jitter in the rotating mirror. I serviced the thing for 11 yrs. before it finally had this problem. Havent had the time to check.

lol...i've heard of seeing double but printing double? :P I had a Laser Jet 6L Gold. I traded it for my new samsung :)
Did get the Samsung 1610 mono laser finally. Samsung has done fine in other stuff they supplied us in the past (HDD, LCDs, CDRWs) so with mixed opinion here, I opted for it. But samsung or anyone else, it's already pinching when i have to take 40 printouts a day.. ouch!!!
thanks for all those who contributed.

Use the economy mode button. Prints are just fine even with the economy mode and it uses about 50% less ink...
thanks for all those who contributed.
Glad to be of help :)
