In my xine in suse 10.1, there is no VCD button, only dvb and dvd. I feel its a scaled down version. When I was compiling the xine-lib from the tar file, it did have entries for vcds. But the problem is that I cannot remove the installed rpm as it gives dependency errors of other players. Totem too does not work.
In my FC5 there is no xine as the rpm -q does not show any xine entry. The command 'xine' too does not work indicating there's no xine installed. However there is totem as well as noatun. They are supposed to be xine guis. Totem can list my vcd in its file menu but it cannot run it as it gives an error of 'cannot find path'. (in both oses)
I have observed that the new linux OSes don't have entries for cd drives in fstab. Are the new kernels using some virtual method of mounting cds? They don't show up in the mount command either.
Could you give an exact list of steps you took to load FC5 and get xine working? If anyone else can give the same steps for Suse 10.1 then that would be great.
Well rony ...I use FC5 and xine works perfect for me. Here's what I did... 1] Enable freshrpms repo in yum/yumex (I prefer yumex)
2] do yum install xine-lib kaffeine (its not 'xine' ..its 'xine-lib')
3] Have all the win32 dll files in /usr/lib/win32/
4]this will play all your vcd's and most avi files.
5] If you want all media capabilities, do 'yum install mplayer mencoder ' This is also from the freshrpms repo.Mplayer simply rocks.
Dear Rony,
Suse Linux does not contain support for mp3, copyrighted dvds, etc. If you want full functionality, then go the packman site (http://packman.links2linux.org) and download xine-libs from there and install/upgrade it. Since xine-libs is already installed on your system, you will have to choose the upgrade option with the rpm command i.e. rpm -U. That's it. You could use YAST, but YAST on Suse 10.1 is broken. Updates are available, but if you are not that fond of YAST, then I suggest using another package manager called "smart". Check out at http://labix.org/smart. There are instructions elsewhere to perfectly setup smart for Suse 10.1. A bit of searching would be enough.
After upgrading, all your files will open/work as with other media players. Now you can use any front end like xine, kaffeine, etc. to play your media files. You should also install libdvdcss (http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/) to view copyrighted/encrypted DVDs. More information on http://developers.videolan.org/libdvdcss/
Tip: To find extra/other packages for Suse you should visit http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ (Guru's RPM site), it is dedicated to Suse Linux. And of course packman.
HTH, Rajen.
Yes, Packman is the way to go! I was not able to remember the link since I used suse around 2 years back. Not touched since then. But Packman has all multimedia packages you need and much more.

Hi Rajen,
You have got the picture clear. I already have xine-lib, xine ui and the win32 dlls in my system. Still the problem.
I will try the upgrade option. Actually I had already visited the jem.. site that gave links for the packman site but unfortunately that packman link would not open. I will try again. Maybe some net server problems.

Rony.

That's because xine-libs by Suse Linux are not compiled with mp3 support. So, although you have installed xine-libs it won't play mp3. So, download the one available with packman and you are on your way. Alternatively you can download the xine-libs sources and then compile it yourself. I prefer doing that because downloading from packman will want you to download lot of other stuff (l don't exactly remember which one, but all are other multimedia libraries). So, just download the sources of xine and compile it. When you run configure select the --help option and see what options are enabled/disabled by default, so you wouldn't miss any stuff that you might want.
I guess Win32 dlls will help for native Windows files like .asf, .wmv, etc. but not for mp3. This is my guess, others could correct me.

I had done that using the tar.gz and it successfully got installed too. After that I had even played a vcd once but could not repeat the process. Then realising that there is an rpm installed already, I had done a make uninstall for that xine-lib.
Now I have updated the xine-lib rpm with the latest libxine 1.1.1 from packman. It asked for the speex >=1.1. version. I updated it with the later rpm and then the xine was updated.
Now dvds play in xine as well as kaffeine but vcds are still a problem. They don't play in xine but atleast now it has a vcd button in it. Kaffeine did play the vcd once but then never again. This takes care of the plugin and decoders part. Another thing, the disc1 of the same vcd plays after repeated tries in kaffeine but disk2 is not that successfull. Kaffeine always keeps throwing up the error of path not found even after typing the correct path in /dev as well as /media format. That could also be the reason xine cannot open the vcd.
I feel that this issue is related to the way the system mounts the vcd file system. BTW I have 2 drives one cdr/w and one dvd rom. Any clues on this peculiar problem.

Rony.

dejavu...
xine --verbose should give you more info on what the heck is going wrong...
