HA HA. My mother-in-law all of 64yrs and who never used a pc before. Uses Debian GNU/Linux for the past 3 yrs. As does my 11 yr old nephew - been using linux since he was 4 yrs. We never taught him to use a pc. He learnt probably by observation. He and his friends used windows for games too. What was their preference - 80:20 for linux. What were the reasons - The games were good and "madech bandh hoth nahin" and "phata phat chalta hai"

well said.
my mum uses linux for the past few years.Never really sat on a windows m/c. Recently went to my bros place and tried to use the comp. After a short while, she put up her hands in despair, and said "i cant use this, its too confusing!"
just goes to show, its more an attitude issue, than a technical one.
on that note my 8 year old nephew recently gave me a "shock" by finding his way around my FreeBSD m/c. (command line!!!!) [ i had logged in and started a console game.., he had exited it, and was happily launching other games ] ..... he left me feeling 'old'.
Its a wake up for all the rest who think Open Systems are confusing and difficult. They are not!
must add this, all this is rather nice to see.

Thats true for me too. My linux class insists on command line only and when I recently wanted to transfer files in dos mode in a customer's machine, I was struggling to remember the dos commands.
Rony.

Same here.I couldn't remember the command for making a directory in dos when i had gone for an interview.I was so used to "ls". I was literally asking other candidates for it.

I have a five year old daughter and have started to teach her computers at home. I am starting off with Knoppix. She loves the Potato Guy Game. I want to teach her about word processors and spreadsheets rather than Word and Excel.
can anyone suggest any good packages for the agegroup around 5-7 years? I am planning to start weekly sessions for my nephews also now.

Hi Vinayakam. You can try out http://schoolforge.net for free software for kids.
Also, would be nice if you didn't top post when sending mails to the list. It messes up the readability of the thread in the list archives.
Thanks everybody for the tips. I will be doing some heavy duty downloading today.
