This was already in the agenda,only it was drowned out with only occasional reminders by myself.Actually,it was a byproduct of Nagarjuna Sir's thoughts at the last meet that,since the problems being solved by the GLUG on the list are no longer of the form like "Sound is not working","X won't accept max refresh rate",etc ,it shows that GNU/Linux is mature enough to be go out of the hobbyist domain.It already has,for that matter.
Whatever,the main issue is that Sir was saying that the GLUG should now be more involved in spreading the philosophy and culture of GNU/Linux.

Err.. really sorry if I missed something since I couldn't make it for the last OSM workshop in Bombay - but as I gathered, shekhar and schuyler were doing some work on it and since they're going to be down, i thought it might be useful to get their inputs on what their plans were, vis a vis not just mapping, but software development, etc. as well, especially as no one had come forth to do the presentation yet. With regards to "why dont you guys do some mapping?" - i think the point is also to address the tools, etc. with which we can do that mapping and see what holes are there to be filled, what tools can normal people use?, apart from just taking out gps devices and uploading tracks .. Just doing the directions to CAMP page today, I had to resort to using an iframe because I couldn't figure out the OSM / OpenLayers Javascript API and the different projections it seemed to use in the limited time I had to put the page up.. w/ regards to the mumbai scene - : P - only time will tell, no?
Err.. anyways - apologies for speaking up there - I honestly have been quite clueless about the OSM/Freemap project for the past year or so - really hope someone can give a good update on it at the meet tho .. would love to be able to / know how to "go do some mapping" ...

to put it very briefly, the outline for India as well as most towns, some rivers and major roads have been imported from AND database (a database built by the american CIA). This varies in detail, depending on the CIA's priorities. Our job is to correct the mistakes and fill in the blanks. For this we have several tools:
1. The online editor Potlatch. This can be used in two ways. One - if you have a gps device, you can use Potlatch to trace out the details from your tracks. If you do not have a device, you can use Yahoo satellite imagery to trace features. OSM has permission to use Yahoo imagery and the use is with no strings tied, so the data created is free. The problem of course is how good the images are for your area. For Ooty, the resolution is so poor that even the town cannot be seen. This is true for the whole of Tamilnadu except for Chennai. If you look at chennai you will find excellent detail, most of it done from yahoo imagery with some use of gps tracks for fine tuning. Mysre, Bangalore, a lot of Karnataka, Delhi and Mumbai have very good imagery. So for the older parts of these places, a hell of a lot of work can be done without a gps device. If this work is done, it helps those with devices to concentrate on newer features like recently built flyovers etc. The other day, I was stuck in a meeting and was able to trace the Yamuna river from Delhi upto allahabad and the ganga from there to somewhere in Bihar. I was also able to do most of the Kabini and the Kaveri in the south.
2. JOSM is a java editor for creating and editing maps. It can be used to create maps from gps tracks. It can also be used along with Yahoo imagery for tracing maps as described above.
What needs to be done in Mumbai is to fill in the blanks. And then coordinate those guys with gps instruments to do the fine tuning and the new features.

further to my previous mail, I was looking at your area in the potlatch editor. All the data is AND data and not very accurate compared to the yahoo satellite imagery in the back ground. The roads all go through buildings, but it is fairly easy to realign these. Also I see a stadium on the east, very easy to mark that too. All you need to do is register and login

I just adjusted 14th and 15th road a bit. I notice that on the map Vitalbhai Patel road is shown to the west of the stadium whereas the satellite map shows the same road to the east of the stadium. I am sure you would be able to locate the KFC on the map and mark it. It is slow tedious work, but well worth the effort

FOSS is a different game altogether. In Windows you can simply be a service provider and the client is supposed to know how the software works on his own and he takes the initiative to do so. In FOSS, simply providing the software is not enough. The client expects training or will go back to Windows. I don't have the time to train people. For most people, FOSS will work more as a solution/package to a specific requirement rather than just a software for daily use, unless the user is self motivated. Plus many of my clients use web based services that run only in Windows, like share trading softwares. The package makers do not support GNU/Linux. Many have problems with OO not functioning the same way as M$ Office. Ultimately I have stopped bothering about making GNU/Linux work for them and I have stopped complaining too.

Rony means a reseller and mantainence service provider. If you are a linux service provider, you would also have to provide training as one of the services. The vast majority of users are clueless even on a doze box, but do not know that. If they have a problem they can phone another clueless friend who will lead them to the final solution (reinstall). However If you are correctly accounting for the costs, you will realise the massive inefficiency with doze and hence would be willing to incur the pain of retraining. With small businesses and individuals, this costing is never easy if at all attempted.
Recent story: A friend of our business associate has about 20 pcs and his hardware provider who also doubles up as the software expert spends several hrs almost daily sorting problems. Since the business is used to the "free" service from the hardware guy, who recommends better hardware every few months and has to run ever faster to keep things falling apart, nothing will change. The friend was surprised to know from our associate that we never need an AV or reinstall.
As far as the incompatibilities go, try complaining to M$, who by the way are busy changing the specs disclosed earlier as part of a DOJ ordered solution to the cases against market restricting tactics practised by them, WITHOUT informing the court.

They hardly see me because as a service provider, it is my responsibility to keep their systems up and running with minimum breakdowns. I cannot be in many places at the same time so their systems have to be running smoothly.

True, if you compare with the older bunch, there's obviously more youngsters willing to accept new technologies. But as a contra view, I've met so many youngsters (engineers, might I add) who are the first to dismiss Linux as 'not user friendly' just because they were forced to use it for some project and it didn't quite behave like windows. Even telling them that my sister has figured out how to do everything on Mandriva on her laptop (she's a psychologist, not even close to being a techie) wouldn't convince them -- they'd say that I'm fibbing and hold on to their very dear impression they had made (or heard about -- shocker isn't it?) years ago.

hello all. there are a few points on which I would surely like to comment. firstly I *TOTALLY AGREE* with JTD that nothing should be given for free. I and Nagarjun did experience this last year in an exhibition in SIES college where we created a set of one ubuntu cd and 2 apt-on cds (3 cd set ) in all and packed it nicely in a cardboard box with an installation and basic migration/ manual. we sold it for Rs. 75 and only those who were convinced and interested purchased the cd. not only that, they did write back to me on email and even contacted me for solutions on problems they faced. They are now complete ubuntu users and the number is 45 users in all. I have ever since tried this experiment in 3 more places including Bal vividha done by comet media foundation and a couple of other exhibitions in nagpur and nasik. all gave me similar results. secondly, if my customers don't realise the power (forget freedom and idealogy for a while), then it is nither the mistake of free software and its supreme quality nor the customer. it is the vehicle that is at falt and I am not ashamed to admit that I have done this mistake a couple of years back when trying to promote free software in a big company. but last year I tried in that same paper mil in rahuri and the people who were actually fighting tooth and nail for keeping free software away, eventually became biggest supporters of the same. and now I know arun khan on this list also had a similar experience. I believe having good knowledge and communicating the right tips and tricks at the right moment during a demo is the key. talk the "aam aadmi ki bhasha " and let people into a smooth migration which includes having good knowledge of document transfer and things like formula etc in a spread sheet. make people realise how bad their own experiences have been, this needs to take a bit of insight of what problems they must have so far faced. Eventually there is one point where the freedom aspect actually meats the practicalness. it is our job then to find this meeting point and properly emphasise on that point and let the client understand things which they just can't do in windows for example. and most of you would agree that for most tasks today windows is an absolutely rubbish option. For example the links list and headings list option in mozilla firefox, which I demonstrated in the last lug is just a dream for ie users. people can be told that this is just one extention which gives such a rich web experience. there are so many extentions and they keep on growing just because u as a customer has a "say " in the free software world. Then there is the common question of "how easy it is?" my question is "how easy can we make it for our customer"? again the key is communication and how smoothly we can bring the customer to shed his mentel blockage that "afterall microsoft is microsoft. it has not become popular just like that?". so these are a few things which can help future service providers. I don't want to flame roni or any one else. but again it will be our approach which makes customer go this way or that way. give me a new customer who knows nothing about computers, I promis I will make him feel a fool using windows. it is the matter of how we present things. happy hacking. Could you provide a documentation on the different types of migration that you have carried out. Something like a how-to. I need inputs on how people moved from commercial industry packages in the following below. How do they deal and interact with their suppliers and customers with the new data formats.
1) graphics and 3D 2) audio video editing 3) drafting 4) Tally 5) Custom made inventory-invoicing packages (for windows) 6) share market trading software.

Freedom equates to no vendor lock-in. If you are speaking to managment types, talk of the downside of vendor lockin. Very true! I have installed GNU/Linux on customers' machines for free, just for promotion and they don't have any value for it. They treat it as a demo and go back to doze as soon as they find it a different environment. They don't even bother to make an effort to understand it. Now I only give live demos and provide live CDs just to let them get the hang of it and that too, only to those who show a little interest.
