hi,
i am planning to buy a laptop to use Linux on it.which brand among the present breed offers the best support for Linux with respect to hardware compatibility. are there any up-to-date resources on the web which i can look into.
also just as an after thought i am just curious as to how the Apple Powerbook which has the BSD core and the Mac interface compare to a normal laptop running Linux. my curiosity stems from the fact that its my guess that the Mac OS X would allow me to run most of the GUI based programs available for Linux or BSD and at the same time allow me to use M$ products for the Mac like MS Office (well... all us still use a little bit of M$ everyday)
regards NDK

Well, I thought this might help. I am currently using a Dell laptop to run RedHat 7.3 beta 2 and its running great. During installation i had no hardware problems whatsoever. Infact, Dell even has its own Linux Tech Support by Phone helpline if u need some help. I tried to get the same distro to work on my friend's Sony laptop running an AMD Duron 800 Mhz machine but the install kept failing due to hardware incompatibility. Probably i screwed something up while installation though. Hope this helps. Orca

you can try Kenneth Harkers site for Linux on Laptops
inbtw: i run SuSE 8.0 and a chroot Gentoo 1.1a on my Laptop i.e a Sony Vaio F590 no issues with hardware or pcmcia for me.

I have used Redhat 7.0 and currently using Mandrake 8.2 on my Dell Inspiron 5000e. No problems reported @ all. I had also installed Mandrake 8.0 on a spare Compaq Presario 1800 XL. That was fine too, but I vote for Dell.
Cheers, Shishir
