I have MTNL TriBand out of their Khar(W) xchg. As you said it is good when it works but I have experienced a few outages and was not able to get thru to their support.
Me thinks it is far far better than the other isp's. I had total outages of less than ten minutes, except once when the wire was faulty.
Totally agree that is better than the other consumer ISPs in Mumbai. I was merely giving you a data point since you solicited feedback re: their service. The throughput is consistent around 226 Kbps. IMO, if MTNL can get it's act together on the support end, they could give the other ISPs a run for their money - you get a landline and Internet in one package :)
Regarding the 502T modem, I ran into a couple of weird behaviors:
1. Need MSIE to program port forwarding rules! I cannot not
program any port forwarding rule using Firefox (Linux and Windoze) or Konqueror.
No problems at all with mozilla, FF, Konqueror or lynx (only used lynx for reading something on the modem). Debian sarge.
Thanks, this gives me a data point. I have static IP and just logged in to modem (FF 1.0.6 SuSE 9.3). Same problem, some of the graphics of the pages do not load :( Time to follow up with the DLink guys. If you could send me the firmware version it would be great.

I also have MTNL broadband, have taken the DSL 1250 plan, It works out to be @ 1700 per month with the ADSL router monthly charges. Dont buy the router from MTNL, since the D-Link router gives problems and they had to replace it twice. The speed is excellent and they give a fixed IP with this plan, Their support sucks though, the engineers dont have a clue as to whats going on. However when it works, which is most of the time it is excellent. Since you have a router, you can connect it to your hub and can use either linux or windows, dosent matter..

What is the brand of your modem/router that you are using currently? I have also had one 502t go bad. Fortunately, it is a rental so MTNL replaced it. Personally, I think rental is better - the unit does not work, the onus is on MTNL to fix/replace it.
BTW, I don't see the 1250 plan on their website http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/internetservices/adsl/adsltariff1.html#service
I have the Night Unlim. plan; for me 500MB/mo is enough for day time web/email access.
At the time of composing this message (around 14:25), I am experiencing partial network outage @ MTNL. For the past 20 mins or so, I have been unable to access any hosts outside of MTNL network.
