I have a fully updated Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) installation with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel. It seems like my computer cannot boot without the all_generic_ide parameter added to the kernel line in menu.lst
If I remove the all_generic_ide parameter, my computer won't boot and gives an error "waiting for root file-system". Also, all my ide devices are detected under /dev/sdx. Is anybody experiencing similar problems?
Regards, Amit.

In your bios what are the IDE/SATA settings?
2 days ago I installed Kubuntu 7.10 from a CD, in my laptop that also has Kubuntu 6.10. It now detects my drives as sda, so that is ok. How is Kaffeine working in your 7.10? Mine crashes everytime I try to play a video. Even gxine goes for a toss. Only mplayer works but I cannot reduce the high contrast and brightness as mplayer does not have the setting. Another thing I found was that there is no libxine-extracodecs available for 7.10. I had last installed them on 7.04 at a client's place and the system installed and is running without any problems on a Gigabyte 945 and SATA hdd. For 7.10 it is w32codecs.

I don't know. What should I look for?

Well, when I installed Kubuntu I didn't face this problem. The computer used to boot without the all_generic_ide parameter. Then randomly one day it decided it would not find the root file system and would go to the initramfs prompt (Error: waiting for root file-system). I searched and found a link in Launchpad which said that this was due to a bug! Well the workaround was to add all_generic_ide to the kernel line. Everything works pretty well on my computer right now but I am not quite satisfied with the throughput of my hard disks since I have added this option. Kaffeine works fine. No problem with video playback whatsoever.
What exactly is happening when I add this all_generic_ide parameter? Should I compile a new kernel or something?

In the BIOS there is a setting for SATA or IDE type of disks ( can't recollect the exact words ) but I remember I had to change the default setting when loading the 'other' operating system for someone's 945 motherboard. Maybe your CMOS got reset and that's why your disk parameters needed the change.
