hi ! recently installed linux on my friend's comp. Now somehow he has forgotten the root password. Is it possible to recover the lost password? The password file is shadowed. I feel that reinstalling linux is not a good and intelligent solution. Please help

Boot from a boot floppy or a rescue disk. Mount the root file system. Edit the shadow file. Delete the encrypted password. Restart the machine, and reset your password.

type "linux single" at lilo prompt, (this thing only works only if it is not disable by bastille-firewall which requires you to enter root passwd). then change the root passwd. if you're using mandrake, then insert mandrake installation cd & press F1, then type "init 1" (may be something like this), & then mount your "/" partition & change passwd using "passwd".
