hi guys i have finaly figured out what to do with jdk1.3 and redhat 7.1.the info may be a outdated as newer version of jdks have been launched but nevertheless
this is what you have to do first set the envirnoment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the directory /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/client & /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/classic & /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre/lib/i386/server or where you have installed them then set the envirnoment variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
after this create a symlink for the cat file which redhat has removed from the past location
after this you should be able to get java running the reason behind the setting of LD_ASSUME_KERNEL variable is the jdk1.3.o version is not working with the new floating stack feature of the i686 version of glibc.the problem is due to the assumptions made by jvm which are now invalid .this has been supposedly corrected by the new version of jdk .if you have 1.3 then force glibc to use the deprecated stack model by settting LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
if any one has got some experience with GUI development in java please contact me individually not through the mailing list i am facing some problems . bye tushar
