Better still, for the people that work with logic-levels and electronics, here's a neat project that uses the STA013 chip from ST Microelectronics...

Thanks for the wonderful link dear. The cost of all the components turns out to be:
MP3_PCB_ASSEM MP3 Player Board, Fully Assembled and Tested $150 MP3_DISPLAY LCD Display For MP3 Player, 24x8, with Pushbuttons and Cables $42 CABLE_IDE_LAPTOP Cable for Laptop (2.5 inch) IDE Hard Drive, 1.4 Inch Length $9 STANDOFF Standoff Set For Mounting Laptop Hard Drive $3 PWR_12VDC 12 Volt DC Power Adaptor (US only) $8 SIMM_32M Standard 72 Pin SIMM, 32 Megs, Used $8 Totals :- 220$
That totals to about 220$ with i do not know how much for a Laptop HDD. Apart from this all we need to also account for a custom casing to have these plugged in. It will turn out to be about 15Grand over all.
For that price we can purchase an AppleIpod which is far more compact and robust and pretty portable out of the box. Since i know a close friend who has just obtained one for 14Grand with about 20Gb in storage.
Whatda say????.
Trevor
The project isn't much complex. Have a look at it. Regards,
ah

For learning purposes see if you can manage with a normal HDD instead of a laptop's. That will bring down your costs and use locally available cables. Make your own power supply.
JTD can guide on this. Can a pci i/o card (Rs. 1k2 only) be used with some extra circuit (without any mobo) to get access to a HDD and then convert its signals into mp3 using an open source program loaded into a memory chip? Can pci standards be used on a pci card without a pci slot mobo?
Regards,
Rony.

VIA makes ITX mini board, which is as good as regular mobo but small in size. It also has 5.1 Dolby sound output , hardware MPEG4 and much more.
It boots up via USB flash drive.

I purchased it a year back for 4k or so. Any VIA dealer (I think it was eSys) would be able to help.

That's really nice. But MP3s that do Dolby aren't exactly available... AFAIK, the original spec only accommodated two channels.
