i have a dual boot wth kubuntu/win 98 on my system. both are on separate hard disks.in kubuntu it shows all the hard disks(i.e, drives used by windows as well) but in windows it does not show me the kubuntu installed drives. now i want to uninstall kubuntu, how do i do that? had the drives been visible in windows which is definitely a drawback, i wldve formatted the kubuntu harddisk, but since it does not show me the drives, how do i uninstall kubuntu ?

drives, how do i uninstall kubuntu ?
Start your installation system and come to the part where you're asked to partition the disk. Delete the Kubuntu partitions, save the changes and exit the installation system. After that, start your computer with the windows 98 boot disk. At the prompt type:
fdisk /mbr
That should do it.

Do you want to remove Kubuntu, only because you cannot view kubuntu partitions in Windows?
How is it that you are using Windows 98? Is you computer too old (> 5-6 years, from the date of purchase?) [Old Hardware?]
If you are interesting in _viewing_ GNU/Linux partitions (I assume, only ext3/ext2) in Windows (preferably Windows 2000/XP or Later), you can check out this website

if you use doze fdisk from the command prompt, you will see the kubuntu partition as a non-dos partition. Zap it.

Explore2fs works well with WinXP. I had tried it sometime back. I am not sure about other OS combinations.

1. If you are removing Kubuntu just because you are not able to view it in windows, then reconsider your decision as they are tools like one being already pointed out. 2. If otherwise, then you can download the image of GParted live and burn it. Boot it as you will boot a Live CD, and delete your existing partitions/reformat it to NTFS or whatever partition you want to use. 3. The same point2 can be done using a Kubuntu Live CD, by using the QParted which you will find in the Menu (Utilities or System Tools), which can also help you in deleting the Kubuntu partitions.
Personally, I feel Kubuntu is more preferable/usable than Windows 98 (even if you have a legal copy of it).

I am not sure about Windows 98 but in XP I have seen disc management, which will show linux partition as unknown, you can format it from within Windows itself. I guess it should be there in 98 too.

Siddhesh, Is this related to Mr. Kenneth's post or Mehul's? (or both?)
Anyways, fdisk would only *list* the (ext3/ext2) partition as Non-DOS when you select option [4].
IIRC, the OP's post was about viewing (contents) of the Kubuntu Partition.

It was for Mehul's post.

It does on Windows 2000 (and later) but not on Win98. Atleast that's what I recollect. It's been over 2 years since I've removed Windows from my home PC :)

I felt that the issues of viewing partitions (or contents) was related to the OP not being able to see the partitions on Windows to be able to delete them.

Boot off the Win98 boot disk ( the Floppy or the CD whichever suits you ). Next, run fdisk. You'll see the Linux partitions possibly marked as unknown or whatever. Delete them. Format them and be on your way out of the Linux world. If you still see the grub menu then run the boot disk once again and run fdisk /mbr
I dont have much hopes to see you in the Linux world ever again but I hope that you'll change your mind and use a distro that'll fit u well.
WARNING: Use this solution at your own risk. If you destroy your system, it isn't my fault and CERTAINLY NOT Linux's fault.

Boot into Kubuntu. Run sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdb bs=512 count=1 where hdb should be replaced by the disk with Linux on it.
