Hi Luggers !
I'm trying to install gcc-2.96-84.i386.rpm ( taken from the PCQ Linux CD) on a RHL 6.2 (zoot ?) m/c. The installation is almost a yr old and it does not have any of the development tools as well as compiler ..
When I issue the following command
$ rpm -i gcc-2.96-84.i386.rpm
I get the following error
Error : The current version of rpm only supports packages having major number <= 3.
I checked up with rpm docs and cud understand that in the above rpm, _2.96_ is supposed to be the major number.
Then in order to upgrade the current installation of rpm, which I thought cud be the cause of the trouble, I tried to use the rpm installation binary available from the same CD. I got the same error for it. In fact, I got the same error for all the packages that I tried to install/upgrade.
What cud be wrong here? I'm not supposed to remove the current installation, nor do I have direct CD-Drive access to this m/c.
Thanks a lot in advance
Regards, Kinjal Sonpal

This is in the archives. You need rpm version 3.0.5 or 3.0.6 first. That will allow you to install other stuff.
When it says packages having major no <=3, that refers to the version of rpm used to create the package, not to the version of the software inside the package.

Yes, i actually went thru' the archives, but cud not find proper sources to download the rpm from the net. Now I got it from Anand.

Install the upgrade RPM, I will mail you the upgrade rpm on your e-mail ID. I am not sure whether this version is available for download, but I have it on my disk.
Run the foll. as root.
# rpm -Uvh rpm-3_0_5-9_6x_i386.rpm
This will upgrade your rpm. Installing the gcc rpm may then work.

Thnks for the rpm. I cud upgrade the RPM properly.

This still does not work. Actually there looks to be some dependancies associated with gcc. In order to satisfy those dependancies, I was asked to upgrade/install binutils, cpp, and glibc packages, which again gave me some more dependancy problems.
I think rather than upgrading/installing separate packages, I might be better off with upgrading entire installation. I have the PCQ CDs with me. Will this be a good idea? I can't afford to remove the current installation, mainly becoz there're no means to back-up the current data.

This is precisely the reason why some of us have chosen the model of Debian distro, and the superb apt-get technology. Not to open a distro war, but to inform people here that these problems are solved ingeniously already.

Cud u throw some more light? As far as the issue on the hands is concerned, as I said I'm not allowed to do much with the installation, mainly becoz of my employer's policy and their resistance to change.
We badly need the C++ compiler on a 2 yr old RHL 6.2 installation. And I have PCQ 7.1 and SuSE 7.1 CDs with me.
But, I can try out a lot with my home PC, like I've been doing so far.
Thnx a lot.

go to securityfocus, and make a list of security holes in RH 6.2. Give that to your employer and see if they decide to upgrade or not.
