I hope this trick is not too late, give this a try.
when booting, when lilo gives you some time to select the different OS to boot from,
press CTRL+X then enter the labelname with S for example "linux S"
Just pray that it takes you to the prompt without asking for password. I have never tried this in the fsck problem situation, it works on a normal system.

[snip] if you are using lilo as the boot loader than on lilo prompt type `linux 1` it will drop you to the shell from there you can change the password. if still you cannot do it try booting with the bootable cd of suse and on the installation prompt type linux rescue or which ever is the command of the suse for the same it will mount your root file system on some directory (i.e. /mnt/<directory>) on redhat it is `/mnt/sysimage` once it is mounted than do `chroot /mnt/<directory>` now here you can change your root password after changing the password do `sync;exit` and reboot your system.
correct me if i am wrong.

I think the best thing to do is to put your hard disk into another GNU/Linu machine and use the fsck there to clean it. Also, the Red Hat Linux installation CD has a rescue mode ... you can boot into that and then clean the disk - no need to move it to a different box.
This experience should be enough to convince you that it is a Bad Thing (tm) to give out your root password.

My bad! Didn't realise its SuSE, not Red Hat ... but I am sure something similar must be present.
