Hi
We've developed and released some software on GNU/Linux which is licensed with GPL and I wanted to upload it to some website like SourceForge for the world to access and 'hopefully' benefit. ;-)
Anyone on this list done it before? Anyone care to share their experiences before I take the plunge? ;-)
Are there other sites that I should submit it to that would help the community?
Regards
Rishi
Just curious to know what software have you developed. If useful i would like to evaluate new developments by other linuxers.

We've got a kickstart (ks.cfg) file that automates the installation of Red Hat 9 and other scripts that automate the configuration of the OS to perform the following functions
- A Mail Server for the intranet which uses ipop3d, sendmail & fetchmail. - An Internet Router/Dialer with access control by user/workstation which uses iptables and connectd. - A File Server which uses samba.
We've developed a Web based Admin tool to basically add/remove users, groups and mailing lists. At first we thought of using Webmin, but then figured it had too many options which began to confuse our customers, so we decided to write our own tool from scratch to do just want the customer needs to do.
Unfortunately the software currently only works on Red Hat 9. We're hoping to make it distro independent or better yet, bundle it with Debian in one CD in future, so that means we deliver the OS and software on the same CD.
Does this sound of interest / value to the community?

Rishi
If you dont mind can i have a copy of the package,so i can also use it.I would like to test it in my organisation. You can send it off list to rohitbaisakhiya@speedpost.com, if it fits an email attachment.

It's currently a 97 MB tar.gz file ;-)
If it were small I would have put it on our website, but it's pretty huge. In fact that's why I want to put it on some site like Source Forge or as Philip said tigris.
I was just re-looking at our source archive and there appears to be a lot of other GPL software with-in this archive, so I guess I'm going to see if it can be reduced after removing them from the source.
However, that would mean we would need to add documentation to point users to download that specific version of open source / GPL software from the NET.
Also I guess it would be a bad idea to re-bundle existing GPL software within our source files.
Let me talk to developers to see if we can do some clean up and get back to you. It would be a good exercise also before I upload it to the Source Forge website..
That much more less to upload. ;-)

Guess, what guys, I just moved the existing GPL software out from the source tar ball and guess what's the size of new tar ball ..... 32 KB.
;-)
When expanded it becomes 3.8 MB only.
WOW... Lets see if we can keep the components separate and then I'll upload it to the site I guess. I'm sure this would be the 1st bitch most developers on the LIST would give us if we did upload it as is. ;-)
Give me some time to get back to you guys on this.

If you need i have some ip based live servers on which you can upload the full archive and put a link of the same on other sites for downloading. If you like this arrangement u can contact me off list and we can discuss it.

Dear Friends,
I have access to 4 servers of which 3 are located in Italy and 1 in Spain. If you have any such projects, may it be software or free documentation on any topic; and need hosting or access to a collabrative development enviroment. You can send me a email and I will get it hosted.
We are on the look out of such projects. If you know of any please inform me so that we can work together.
One of the servers run GForge.

Hi Warren,
I'm assuming GForge stands for GNU Forge? ;-)
What's the difference between Source Forge and G Forge?
Is it only Philosophical or are there license issues (freedom issues) to be concerned about? I would like to ensure that I make the most appropriate move when I do.
I would be interested in uploading our project to your servers.
However, before I start, I'd like to clean up my files & folders. The current tar ball has a whole bunch of other GPL software that already exists on the NET and thus we need to figure out how to release only our GPL software separately with sufficient documentation so that when end-user downloads and uses our software is able to download the other GPL software needed for our software to work.
I first was very excited about uploading the software when it got released a few days back, but I guess it's going to take a while to do the clean up. I don't want the 1st impression of our software to be bad. ;-)

Rishi

Nothing to it. Create a sourceforge account, submit a request for a project, and add it. You may also want to look at tigris.org. I've also tried savannah - which is run by GNU, but honestly, it sucks.
I'd suggest tigris (although I've never tried it), if you can get your project in there because they use subversion instead of cvs, and if you can't get tigris, then go for sourceforge.
There's also sarovar.org (IIRC) which is in India.
After you've submitted your project and uploaded your files, don't forget to announce your project on freshmeat.net and comp.os.linux.announce.
