I want to convert a really old laptop (Gateway 1998) into a print server + proxy server + other gateway features depending on how well handles the load.
The HDD has failed and I am looking to replace it with an used one.
Please contact me off list if you have a spare 2.5" 40-80 GB IDE/SATA [1] HDD in working condition [2] with your best price.
[1] Preference is for IDE but SATA will also do (I have the SATA/IDE converters and cables) [2] must pass badblocks w/o any errors.
TIA -- Arun Khan
Does it have USB ports? USB stick / USB HDD might be an option.

It does have USB ports which I plan to use for a USB printer. As I mentioned, the unit is ancient, the BIOS does not support booting from USB devices. I did have an external floppy drive that does not work any more. My only option is a HDD.

Busted. It is a 1998 laptop - it will be easier to find a hard disk than the cdrom :) Buying a new HDD is an option but considering the age of the laptop I figured an used HDD (if I could find one) would do.

A USB hub http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hub with two or more USB ports should fit the bill.

As he mentioned in the earlier text, Booting from usb is not an option on his bios :)

Thanks but how will it help to boot the laptop?
The laptop is 13 years old; it's hard disk and CDROM are RIP but it still works. The BIOS does *not* support USB boot. It has two USB ports. I will use one for the printer and the other will be a spare. No of USB ports is not an issue for me.
Please read the earlier posts in this thread.
<update> I have scrounged around in my old hardware bin and managed to find an old 10GB HDD that still works! Not sure if it can keep up with an 18x7 duty cycle. Nonetheless, I will give it a shot.
I will be installing Voyage Linux (Debian derivative) which works quite well with 256MB RAM and needs < 256 MB disk space for an install that includes CUPS and a lot of the base system. </update>
Thanks to all who responded.
