Can some one list out the minimum installation required for debian to work as file server, basic authentication, w98 to be clients using Samba, execution of login script and optionally a wine to use windows applications.

Wine requires a decent configuration. but if you consider not using it, then the choice depends on 1. the number of clients you are going to support. (If the clients are less than 100, you might be able to use even a p166 with 64mb of ram.) 2. If the clients will be solely relying on server for data requirement, you need a machine with better i/o susbsystem. cheapest solution is newer machine (p3+) with udma based subsystem. although scsi and other things are recommended for REAL load.

Try SAMBA PDC. Works fine with win98 clients. Login script also is possible.
