Hello, I am trying to setup an email server in my office premises. I want to setup a server which can receive mails for a domain like the following one( giving only the format not the exact one since it is not yet decided): user@anything1.host1.domain.com user@anything2.host1.domain.com user@anything2.host1.domain.com
basically its the second subdomain which is changing along with user name, rest of the other things remains same.
I have a static IP with me which is yet to be registered for the domain name. Since I am new to this task and don't know how to go about it. Though I have read from a site www.dyndns.org, and they suggest that the static IP should be on the hostname host1.domain.com for above example. Am I right in understanding that? Also please let me know the step by step process of how to go about it, including how to request for the MX and A records settings. Thanks in advance, Ashwin

Get a domain registered from a registrar (Do not go to Verisign).

If your public address is user@sub.subdomain.example.com, then all of them need to have an MX record pointing to that IP. At this point, the DNS and BIND book from O'Reilly is to be recommended. For example,
sub.subdomain.example.com 86400 IN MX 10 mx1 mx1 86400 IN A 192.0.20.1
Then setup your mailserver on the box. I believe you could just hire someone from the Delhi LUG to get all that work done, if you want a consultant for that (If you are new, it might be a lot easier to hire a consultant and save your time).
