Hi, ----- Original Message -----
standard hardware and it detected and worked properly. Incidentally, I use
a 810 Motherboard with Intel PIII 800 Mhz, 256 MB ram, 2 x 40GB HDDs,
CDWriter, DVDROM and printer.
I'm Planning to buy a PC for home. It will be a Celeron 1.2G, due to cost considerations(compared to P4). Are there any issues re installing Linux(specifically PCQuest Linux 8.0) on a Celeron system? Any particular motherboards or peripherals/cards I should avoid (or use)? Thanks, --Royce.

I would reccommend an Athlon XP 18. It has excellent performance and is cheaper than the P4. Linux compatibility is good, but the nvidia chipset requires a proprietary driver, available at no cost and without source from the nvidia website. If you have no hang ups with using non-Free stuff, then it's good, otherwise go for a different chipset.
You can also look at Via/Cyrix. They claim to be linux friendly.

I have
OS : RH8,Mandrake 9.0 Processor : 1.7 G Celeron MB : P4M266 Via [sound card driver not availbe for rh8 but are for rh6.2] Sound Card : C-Media
My Box is functioning with no problem :-)

I would suggest that you go in for a AMD Duron 1.2GHz. It is /much/ superior to the Celeron 1.2GHz and costs almost the same (or less). For mobo, I would suggest the Asus board with the NForce chipset with onboard GForceII accelerator and a 6-channel dolby digital decoder. The mobo costs around 4.2K Rupees and is an excellent value for money. Linux runs on this system very well. In fact I would suggest you go for a AMD AthlonXP 1.7 GHz which costs about Rs.3.7K.
Avoid internal modems.
I have personally run Linux without problems on: AMD 386DX with OPTi board Intel Pentium 200MMX on a Tomato board with VIA chipset AMD Duron 1.2GHz on a ASPRO mobo with VIA KT133 chipset AMD Duron 1.2GHz on a DFi mobo with VIA KL133 chipset Celeron 950MHz with Intel 810e mobo. IBM Thinkpad R32 -> P4 1.7GHz.
HTH, quasi p.s. you will meet people who will say that if you buy AMD your machine will crash. Show them what is appropriate - your finger.

If you plan to use pcquest linux, please read the magazine since they have listed the motherboards which will work. From what I remember, there specified a problem with Intel 438 (or something like that -- its a new motherboard) and said all other standards motherboards should not give any problem. Even for that particular motherboard, they specified what you need to do in order to get it running.
Incidentally, I loaded PCQLinux 8 on a desktop PC with a Intel 810 motherboard. It has not given any problem so far.

Actually a Celeron system doesn't make sense. An AMD Athlon costs just as cheap and performs much better.
Watch where you put your money :).

If you have to install linux, I suggest pls do'nt use the Pcquest distro. It has be unpredictable while installing. Which I see as a major issue.
Beyond that they have packaged really nice stuff.
So its better to go with standard RedHat 3 CD set

What makes you say that the installation is unpredictable ?

This is actually anaconda problem, not pcquest. This I faced when I was making custom CD as well. It is design issue. Anaconda expects everything to be correct unlike some other installers. scratch in CD, issues with install index can be fatal which should'nt be the case.
I some cases Pcquest CD installer crashes.
I have had a bad install recently

Hmm, that happened with me also....i had 2 sets of cds from pcquest. the installer abnormally crashes while formatting partition or making filesystem. all i get is error "caught signal xx, exiting abnormally." i could never figure out why it would happen at that time...
