hi folks
Well having problem with the network speed on linux 7.3, i get 70% packed loss on the local network. at the same time this machine also (dual boot) runs win2k pro and i dont have a problem with the network on windows.
In windows network its 10Mbps/half duplex..and i checked in linux with mii-tool...its 10Mbps/half duplex only...any suggestions...??
NIC is realtek based 8139
Thanks in advance ZK

maybe it's because linux 7.3 was released in the future. maybe at that time there will be some mismatch with your network hardware and the linux drivers. 7.3 will probably be out sometime in the 2040s.

I have been using Realtek based NIC's RTL 8139 all my life and they have not given me any problems whatsoever. Dunno, but check if you have the 8139too.o module insmod'ed. Older Realtek 8139 cards used the rtl8139.o module. 8139too.o is the new avtaar of that old driver. Use this one and not the older one.
To be on the safer side, go to http://www.scyld.com and download the latest driver for that chipset.

Hey Zaheer,
By any chance are you using tulip drivers for your dmfe pci network card ? if so then immd change it to plain dmfe ....
or if you using tulip for any other chipset then check the chipset and replace tulip drivers with apporpriate network chipset drivers,
The tulip driver has some bug, it gets konked off after few transmissions and hence at times you can see your box completely off the network and get a heavy packet loss ... error .. n stuff..
Do check on this ... it has nothing to do with RH 7.3 and the flames on the same.

Phillip !!! Dont be mean. I bet he still does not know what mistake he made. It would have been better if you explained to him the diff between Linux and Redhat
I think he probably meant that he uses RedHat Linux 7.3

I believe u mean RH 7.3 :)).

use ethtool to detect change network card settings and u need to be superuser to make changes/see info. Network speed has a lot to so with the order in which the wires are connected before crimping. If that is not the problem then try using the rset8139 utility that comes on the driver floppy with the card.

RTL8139c/d (Dlink-branded) generally do not give problems and are one of the best ones available in the market today.

So long as you do not ask for 100 Mbps full duplex. They are ok for low performance, but when you *need* good quality, a genuine Intel or 3Com NIC is to be preferred. DLink is nice in a hub, on a switch, it sucks.
