where are you going to store the mail spool files ? what is the MDA you are planning to use ?

Are the email users going to be system users ? and are you going to store the mails in the standard /var/spool/ mail ?

Look at creating a setup with Sendmail+Cyrus. The latest cyrus has the "dot" support and also supports virtual domains. Also in case the mail server needs good performance and security is a matter for you but your newbie to sendmail then I would recommend you to use postfix. Its secure and faster than sendmail.
