Hi all, i've finished downloading all 3 Debain Etch DVD iso images for i386. These are the full install DVD's. i have also written 2 sets of them on DVD's. One set is going to be passed to HBCSE so that more people can make copies, i spoke to Anurag about the same. The other is with me, i'm willing to exchange it for 3 blank Sony DVD-R's. i can't burn them that often as its pretty time consuming and my writer only supports DVD burning max at 2x.
Let's see if we can work out something. If there are other's willing to share in on the burning time, please get in touch with me.
i know most here are waiting for a comment, well i'll throw in one - the text installer is still there and the GUI installer ROCKS :-)

How about creating a repo of likes at HBCSE/IIT or someplace. So when one of us finishes downloading a cd. He can deposit a copy at the said place. That way if someone wants a copy they can get in touch with HBCSE/IIT with blanks and get it burnt. I am more then willing to send all the cds that I have downloaded.
What say you?

Sounds good. Only i don't have the bandwidth to host a repository. If you do, please collect the DVD's from HBCSE and set one up.

Sometime back i used to go to IIT and get the ISOs that i wanted. They still might be maintaining a repository i believe. All you need is a friendly contact person in IIT/KReSIT.

@Gaurav C, perhaps you didn't believe me when I replied on #linux-india :-)
We have a repository (sadly not accessible from outside IITB) of most major linux distributions. If you want the distributions, come to IITB with blanks and burn away. Do sync with me about your plans a couple of days in advance.

Since the repos exist, why not link the server to a WAP and allow contact-less downloads or even net install after loading the base CD? The best places would be college canteens.

Rony.

I am sure you must be aware of the issue that caused the release candidate rc1 of the Etch installer to stop working (it only had a release key that expired, the new release key is only present, at the time of writing, on the daily releases). So please test the dvd's to ensure that they work before burning lots of copies.

i thought that was only with the business card images and not with the full install ones. Anyway, i'll test all 3 DVD's on a box, then if successful forward them to HBCSE.

Not a problem if he is not going to use a network mirror from http://times.debian.net/1073-Key-expiry-breaks-most-D-I-Etch-RC1-images
"The only RC1 images that should remain usable are the full installation CDs and DVDs, but only when used without a network mirror."

Oh, I forgot, to write this in my previous email.
If you do find some time, consider adding this resource to http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/CDs_Available page on the GLUG-BOM wiki. BTW, it hasn't received any hits after the completion (partial, shall I say?) of "Linux Brochure" project.
:)
I have received requests for CD's from nearby areas because of that page, in the past. In that way, those who are interested, can atleast get a copy and not be denied to due to slow / expensive internet connection.

Vihan has sent me the set of 3 DVDs. If anyone wants them, drop me a line offlist. I live in Mulund.
I haven't installed it yet, I'll do so in a couple of days, as soon as I get my hard disk back from my friend. Maybe I'll write a short review.
