I was at the Debian website and read that the next version of their OS (Sarge) is going to built with gcc 3.2. I use RedHat 7.2 and have wanted to use a distribution built with gcc 3.2 so I could use the much improved C++ compiler without hassles. I also wanted to switch to Debian. So the logical conclusion would be to wait for Sarge to be released. The question is, when can I expect that?

http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/
As usual, the release goals and the release date are not going to be determined in advance. To put it simply, "Debian releases when it is time".

If you really need gcc 3.2, why do you wait for any distro to get it in? Just grab the release and compile/install it! Anyway, Redhat 8.0 already ships with gcc-3.2.
And if you think you want to wait for Debian's next "release" ... man, are you misinformed or what! :-D

Thats the feeling I had. I do not know too much about the Debian release process and was looking for a guess from some of the Debian enthusiasts here as to when they think the next release will be. That will give me some time frame atleast..
Well if that's the case, then you don't need to wait for a release at all. You can simply install Sid, the "unstable" version that changes almost everyday. This is the one which always has the latest packages, but all bets are off if you demand stability or even the guarantee that it would work. I use unstable ... works pretty ok, but then again, I don't really do anything great besides surfing and a few assignments.
If you have a very good network connection, you can simply use a boot-CD to install Debian from the network. It automatically selects the IITM mirror when you select India. If you have a relatively slow but good connection, you might want to borrow Debian CD's from someone, and then simply upgrade GCC and other libraries over the network.
