Hello All,
The NGO that Krishnakant is assisting in converting to Linux, plans to buy 4 laptops that will be used for demonstration sessions in multimedia as well as web, graphics and office applications. So the lappys have to run proper sound as well as video. Krish is right now in Kerala so I am posting this message on their behalf.
Those who have recently purchased laptops and are running linux properly on them, please give their suggestions and opinions for lappys that install linux out of the box. Last time Krish and his team had a tough time getting linux up on 102 ggc with dual core processors. So this time we are playing safe.
Regards,
Rony.

IBM Thinkpads are known to work out of the box with all the hardware detected (except for, of course internal modems) and working properly with common distributions. I would recommend several R series models available.
And no, IBM doesnt pay me for advertising :)

Their wireless and their video hardware GL (at least) don't work without proprietary software being installed.

I can't agree with Anurag more on any topic but this one. With a right distro/kernel combination IBM TP just work and without any issue at all. We both have T42 (shameless plug) and I don't think we regret our 1 year old decision to buy a laptop. But yes I have seen more people running R Series ( R51/R52 ) than any other TP model. And all this people use Linux and different distros even - (K)Ubuntu, SUSE.
I think R60 are the entry level TPs these days, just check their configuration and see if they would statisfy the client's requirement.

Seriously? You must not have give proper mailing address.
Cheers!

I plead guilty. I don't think I ever tried that but something tells me it won't worky. ( Damn, should never argue with lawers )

KG does have a point there, but don't plead guilty untill you have verified your lspci output with the currently available drivers :-)

Oh, its not so bad :D

A good resource for them would be http://www.linux-laptop.net/
Also, Dell Inspiron 1405e is also known to work with Ubuntu 6.06, (not an intstalled version), apart from SuSE as the website would suggest. This laptop is specifically for Multimedia and comes pre-installed with Windows XP Media Center.

I have used HP nx6110 laptop and it works out of the box with Debian etch and Ubuntu edgy GNU/Linux distros except for the wireless card which I had in it. It is a broadcom bcm43xx card. If you go for an Intel wireless card then there is no extra effort :)
Currently I am using HP nx6325 which is a AMD Turion X2 64 bit processor based laptop. There is some problem with installing Flash9 plugin for firefox in this since we dont have Flash9 available for 64 bit yet. Except for that everything works fine in it. Again get an Intel wireless card :)
IBM Thinkpads do work out of the box but they're also more expensive than a Dell or HP of the same configuration.
However, please don't go for an Acer, even though you'll get an Acer of similar configuration to other brands for much cheaper -- and with Linux installed. You'll regret it.
I had bought an Acer 4061NWLCi and banged my head for three days with kernel compilations just to get my sound card, wireless, and ACPI working. Apparently the DSDT on this Acer box was broken and I had to manually debug and recompile it! (So much for pre-installed Linux!)
And I'm sure you want to buy a laptop that lasts. Acer build quality it exceptionally poor.
Thank you for reading my Acer review. I've chosen this method to get back at the company.

Thank you, to everyone for their inputs. I have directed the NGO lady to this thread on the website. A dealer is even willing to lend an LG lappy for a day for testing. So Krish and his team will be on it. Thanks again.

I have an Acer 2428 and it works out of the box with Kubuntu 6.06, except for no sound in VCDs and DVDs. Open sound as well as MP3s play well. Anyway sound was not a major criteria for buying the lappy. The main purpose was internet, office and wireless access. I checked out the wireless chip number before buying and it was the common 2200. Wireless was very important.

What is DSDT? Which distro are you using and how did you get sound up. Can you play VCDs and DVDS with sound?

Can you provide details for that?

Hmmm.

Pardon me for taking this off topic.
I use the flash plugin on my Turion64 based notebook using nspluginwrapper. As the name suggests, it acts as a wrapper for using 32bit plugins on Firefox compiled for 64bit systems. Works great.

Did you try http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockwa...
Otherwise, flash player plugin pops up automatically for firefox 1.5 onwards. Does 32/64 bit make a difference? Did you try out the .tar.gz format?

Rony.

It does. To use flash on a 64bit system you have to install the i386 version of Firefox. I used to do that until I came across nspluginwrapper. The Java plugin is still an issue though. I haven't gotten it to work.... yet.

Isn't a 64 bit JDK available? IIRC, I used to use blackdown's 64 bit plugin for 64 bit konqueror.

I never got the 64bit version downloaded from Sun's website to work properly. To be honest, I didn't try hard enough. I'll try blackdown's plugin.

Yes it does makes a difference. Check the following link: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=6b3af6c9&pss=rss...
Yeah I tried the .tar.gz format. The problem with this is they bundle the following files in it: flashplayer-installer flashplayer.xpt libflashplayer.so Readme.txt
So this shared library file is pre compiled which makes it unusable in a 64-bit machine :(
