Does not Boot from the CD. or a DVD. The CD Works fine on other systens, Other OS CDs work fine on this system (Tecra 8100).
Your laptop CD/DVDrom is unable to read the specific media. I have a Tecra 8000. Although the CDROM is able to read most CD-R and R/W, I have experienced similar behavior with few CD-R media. The CDROM led will keep blinking ad infinitum. You might try burning the CD/DVD on to a different brand media.
HTH.

Yes I had already done all those. It did not take the CD provided by LinuxBazar at boot.(which works otherwise) it does not take another CD (moser baer) at boot, which too works otherwise. It does not take the CHIP DVD at boot, which too works otherwise. Which brings me to the admission that this was a red herring. They have just provided the ISO on the DVD and was not supposed to run anyways. It does accept other distros (including some sent by LB) at boot.
For now am using FC3.
I must add rony that i found Xandros pretty neat and I had earlier installed it on a different laptop. detection was not an issue. about the modem, it is not supposed to detect winmodems anyways, but had no problems in detecting external ones.

Which was the version you tried? My experience with Xandros 1 was excellent and it worked even on a winmodem. The Xandros 3 that I tried was the single cd iso that came in this month's (June) chip magazine dvd.
I use an external modem too and it could not detect it properly, even the com port was selected as com 8. I tried different driver and port combinations but the ppp was not able to start the modem. The xine player did not play and video cds and it got stuck so badly that even after giving the kill signal from ps list, it did not clear from the screen. It did not detect my sound device either. After my good experience with Xandros 1, this was disappointing.
One question to you and all linux laptop users. What type of modem is used in laptops? Is it not an internal modem and how does linux work properly on it? ;)
Regards,
Rony.

Winmodem. Have managed to detect it by googling and spending many man hours, but could not get it to connect properly. Gave up because i was connected via LAN anyways. For another machine, a KDS Valiant I just got a pcmcia modem from lamington road for 1200. Did not even try to get the winmodem working.
HTH
